Breeding issues

I've got a breeding issues......everyone has always told me to keep my males & females separate until they are old enough to breed. I followed everyone's suggestions and now that they are of age and females are a minimum of 300grams, I've tried getting the male involved in the social gathering of the ladies, It didn't go very well.

He picked out the oldest girlie (2 1/2yrs old)....but he didn't follow normal mating rituals. He just chased and grabbed.....latched on to her neck but wouldn't get into position (even when she was holding still) then she would just drag him around for a while, then he'd let go. This happened 3 times. After the last release he went to the other side of the cage (to sulk) then charged at her, bit hold of the middle of her tail and shook like a dog playing tug-of-war. I got him to release and seen he had bitten her very deep, bleeding and all (wound was tended to immediately).

They are all virgins, could it be that they just are inexperienced or does it sound like real aggression? My male's normally such a sweetheart of a dragon. Do you think I should try again or just try another male (my other males that I have are either too little or handicapped)

I had a guy from my herp society tell me it's my own fault for not having them grown up together.....he said I retarded their abilities to communicate with each other. Feelings of great confusion and guilt here....HELP.

I'm thinking "loving mom"....."bad pimp".....lol

Hello,

Just a curiosty question. Were the dragons capable of seeing one another? When I purchased Phoenix to breed with Willow, my initial plans for introduction were going to be me placing both enclosures near each other. I was going to do this so that they would both be able to see and possibly communicate with one another.

Phoenix was already gravid when I purchased her,so I didn't have to worry about them getting used to one another. They are housed seperatly. Willow can see Phoenix and he certainly knows she is a female. His colors are vibrant, and he walks around his tank, stops, does a little dance, and then continues on with what he was doing. lol It certainly appears that he is trying to court her. He,on occasion, even tries to walk through the glass to get to her.

Phoenix was residing with males when she was purchased,so she is already used to thier prescence. Perhaps this is something you could try.

Hi Rich,

they've always been where they could see one another....and mine all do the courting stuff and communition (bobs, stomps, armwaving...etc) while in their own tanks. He definately can tell they're females. I'm also guessing, he went for Aurora cause she is in the tank closest to his & he's most familiar with her .

And I don't believe the breeding area was too small......I have a large community "arena" that my girls use daily for socialization (I just don't put handsome in there with them, but he can see them the whole time) I have a basking area in there, as well as plenty of places to hide (my Beauty hid in the bushes the whole time handsome was in the arena....lol)

That same guy(who made me feel quilty) also told me not to expect my breeders to look good after they been breeding a while....he said I should plan on them to have plenty of scars. He also said my handsome was too used to humans and I should get rid of him as a pet and get a REAL breeding male. My reply was, he's my pet FIRST, before being a breeder no matter what.

I would like to get into the breeding aspect of keeping beards, which is why I want to know if I'm doing something wrong(Ive researched this for over 2 yrs, never came accross this situation before) But reqardless, I honestly care more about the health my babies, then the prospect of breeding them.

Herpmom,

I have had mine for almost three years and this is the first year to have eggs from three of my females. I can feel the pain, when I takes so long.. My problem was the males were more than ready but the females did not want anything to do with them. I would just put them in the same tank for a couple of hours with supervision. Just give it some time.

Update:

We gave Handsome another go last night. Everything went much better, even if the actual deed didn't happen.

I waited til I seen all of them doing their bobbing and waving to each other in their tanks, then instead of putting all the girls in at once, we gave him only 1 at a time and he was much sweeter/gentiler. He courted, no aggression......persued latched on ....but just couldnt seem to get into the right possition.

We'll keep trying
