Thinking of Breeding Beardies

Does anyone have a link to a good guide to breeding Bearded Dragons? Or any experience they'd like to share? Is it financially viable or is it more of a liability? How much cost is involved initially? Ive seen the incubators for 35-100 USD, and I'd guess I'd need an enclosure and lights, though I have several reptile accoutrements I could probably piece together. Also I already own two juvies that are currently unsexed but to my eyes they look like 1 male 1 female. Gonna get them probed when tax return comes in

Any advice or links would be much appreiciated, especially from someone with a lot of experience.

Re: Thinking of Breeding Beardies

First ,...you don't probe bearded dragons. You can examine their vent area. Probing is for snakes.
Second if you think you are going to make any money selling baby Bearded Dragons (other then high end morphs) you are mistaken. And its a lot of work! Bearded Dragons are easy to breed and there are alot of baby dragons out there. Our local reptile shop even breeds their own.
You have to consider several things .
Purchasing, set up, and maintainence of an incubator.
Housing. After hatching you are going to have to set up tanks for the babies, which if not extremely well fed will take great delight in eating the tail tips and legs of their cagemates.
Bearded dragons should not be sold until they are at least 6-8 weeks old. This means a LOT of small crickets fed daily! And what happens if you can't find anyone to sell them to? feeding 20+ dragons is going to get very expensive.
If you want to breed them for the experience thats fine. Just don't expect to get rich off of the deal.

Merlin is totally correct. I have been there and done that. You wont make any money unless you have a new morph, lol. They are not easy to sell as Merlin said due to the fact that there are so many out there.

Re: Thinking of Breeding Beardies

Like Merlin and Marsha have said, its going to take a lot of work, and end up taking up a lot of space. It seems like you already have a LOT of different species that you are working with and trying to fine tweak things with. I think that you should try to get everything set with your other animals before trying to bring more into the world without knowing if you would be able to find homes for them.
Plus if the 2 dragons you have now are to young to be sexed they are WAY to young to be bred. You should also consider the fact that constant breeding will greatly shorten the lifespan of your female.

Re: Thinking of Breeding Beardies

I wasn't looking to get rich, just wondering if it is possible to break even or if it ends up costing a ton. I'm also aware that mine are too young to tell, I was told that a vet could probe a lizard if it was to young to be visually sexed, perhaps I got incorrect information and Im sorry. As far as crickets go, I breed them anyway so I dont think itd be a problem coming up with enough. But I guess the consensus is just to not bother, so I suppose I won't.

Re: Thinking of Breeding Beardies

We aren't trying to tell you not to do it, just trying to make sure you go into it with reasonable expectations if you decide to do it.

I don't know about if a vet can probe a BD or not, its not something I have ever heard of, but I do have to wonder what is the point? if they are to young to tell as is, they are to young to breed, and would it really make a difference? (really just asking a question)

I would say that if you decide to go through with breeding, do as much research on it as you can before hand (sounds like you will have some time before the dragons are ready) and make sure you will be able to handle any babies that come from the try. Make sure you female is in prime health before hand too. And even try to start lining up home homes for the babies if you can. Good luck!

Re: Thinking of Breeding Beardies

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't planning on it until they are old enough, just wanted to be prepared and to decide whether or not to do it at all.
