Bear`s Activity

Ive had my bearded for 2 weeks now,he/she is not big if I remember only 6 inches including tail, but I could be wrong, ill measure him when I get home from work. But we have him in a 20 gallon right now( i know he`ll outgrow it soon,im getting some new tanks next week with some birthday cash). his temps are for sure 104 in his basking spot and I think 75 in his cool spot, i have a reptisun 100 watt uv spotlight bulb. And we also have him on childrens white play sand. He just dosen`t move too much yet, he`s loosened up a little bit and chases down crickets and i`ve caught him only 2 or 3 times moving around his cage when hes not chasing crickets, hes eating his collared greens ,not a whole lot but I see leaves spead around his tank on the sand. i just dont see him actually eat it.So to get to my point he dosent move around alot like other Bearded Dragons ive seen that chase me from one side of the cage to the other bobbing and what not, do they just take extra long to get comfortable or when should I expect him to be pretty much settled down.does it have to do with his size? I have alot more questions but this post is getting way to lenghty to read.thanks

Re: Bear`s Activity

Good thing you are getting a bigger tank. 20 gl is to small for a 6 in Bearded Dragon. I would not him feed him crickets in the tank. You should feed him in a seperate enclosure. Give him some more time to adjust but get him moved asap,,it will also be easier to get temps right. Is he defecating regularly. If he seems lethargic, he could be impacted from the sand.

Re: Bear`s Activity

Its not that he`s tored I think, The sand is extremly fine like a dustits just disenegrated if you rub it in your fingers, i feel like hes just scared or not motivated to leave his rock underneath his light. This morning he was sleeping in the sand on the other side of his tank but im just curious of ways to keep him interested in the cooler side of his tank, I forgot his cool side exact temp, but its the temp we read off of a few diffrent caresheets. The way his tanks set up right now the temps just came out perfect with the one light

Re: Bear`s Activity

That sand powder can build up in his system and eventually cause impaction. I think its less harmful than calci-sand, but can cause impaction none-the-less. If you want to have some sand for burrowing, make it in a section and then perhaps use flat stones for climbing in the other areas. And be sure to keep his food on the rock.

Re: Bear`s Activity

Alright I have a section Of like 5 or 6 large rocks, all diffrent sizes but his primary one is flat. You say put his food on a rock, like his rock under his light, will that help him want to eat it more.I also plan on feeding him crickets in an empty 5 gal. Thanks

Re: Bear`s Activity

No, dont put his veggies under the light, put them on a flat rock on the cool side of the tank.

Re: Bear`s Activity

Alright, I have the veggies in a little round dish about 1/3 inch deep 1 1/2 inches across. Should I put themon a rock just so he can see them easier. He`s also very alert might I add, His head always follows my fingers when im in his cage and he followed the tweezers around last night when iI was waving them infront of him to see his reaction, it was like his head was connected to them,he would dart his head so fast whichever direction I moved them. Another off topic thing is I was getting some crickets out of his tank with tweezers when like 10 fell out of the tube when I was only trying to drop one in there And I put a cricket infront of him and he shook his head all around, kinda like a dog when you drap there nose or try to give them somthing they dont want. It was rather funny.

Re: Bear`s Activity

that's hardly big at all for a dish. Just be sure he can't drop them into the sand.

Re: Bear`s Activity

one thing I have a question about is that you said you see leaves spread around the tank, does that mean you are not cutting them up? This would be one reason why it isn't eating them, they would be to big. All veggies should be chopped up to about the size of the crickets you are feeding it. No bigger than the space between its eyes.

Re: Bear`s Activity

the leaves are way smaller than his crickets. I shred them to mush practicly. I noticed he ate a good amount of greens yesturday but didn`t witness. So I put some on his rock next to him and he munched down. Then I hand fed him a small piece of squash and some more greens. I put him in the empty 5 gal with a cricket and he went after it once and missed so I hand fed him 2 crickets. He was definately stuffed last night. Ive noticed he/she has grown probally 2 inches in the 2 weeks Ive had him, I checked out a sight with a growth chart and it seems norm. He has lightened up alot though, Hes sleeping in diffrent parts of his cage and randomly sprints around. I turned his dish upside down and put his greens on top of it so its like a flat rock. I`ll see if he eats more.
