Fluorescent Strip Light

How do I go about making one of these? If it's cheap enough I may just go ahead and add it to my Blue Tongue Skink enclosure.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

What do you mean? Like a light that is used in schools, hospitals, and places like that? You can find a fairly priced fixture for about 15 to 20 dollars depending on the size of the bulb.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

Check out home depot or lowes. They have the basics. you may have to add something to it, to shield the light more down, but they have the basics. The only problem is I have noticed they have larger ones, not smaller ones. So if you need a little tiny fixture, you might want to check out a stand or clamp lamp that takes strip bulbs.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

Well my Blue Tongue Skink enclosure is going to be 4 ft so size really isn't an issue. I don't want to buy a whole fixture, just the stuff to make one. Like the ballast the prongs the chords, all that kind of stuff.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

I'm not sure if you can buy just the parts. They are pretty cheap anyway, why would you need to?
Also a four foot enclosure won't be big enough to put four foot bulbs inside.
You'll need to go about 4 inches wider.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

Right, you can get a hooded one really cheap then, or just get it and take it apart and use what you need. Just check out the hardware store.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

The parts would be extra work. Not to mention you'd have to hide the wires. The smallest fixture I was able to buy at Lowes was a 13 inch. Which was plenty enough light for a 4 ft tank. Just used the shield that it came with and it was fine. The snake may have turned it off once or twice but nothing else.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

I have purchased the fixture and pulled out the guts of it to use. This was because the entire unit was too big but I could make it fit without the box.

Re: Fluorescent Strip Light

Were you able to screw the prongs into the side of the enclosure? If you were I may just do that.
