I see people saying they use these, I can imagine they would be sweet, but arn't they bad for animals/humans?

The blacklights you are thinking of are not the same black lights that users use. I am sure you have seen a "red" light in the reptile department of the store you typically use. The blacklight is basically the same bulb except it is either dark blue or black.

I had a few some time back that didn't emit any light at all. They were just for added heat. The dark blue ones emit some light.

No, people use real black lights for emporer scorpions. We weren't talking about the scorpions though, we were talking about lizards. (Since this thread is in the lizard forum after all.)

I use the "blue" light to maintain the heat in their sleeping area at night. They are in their smaller cages right now, so it works great. It doesn't give off much light so it doesn't seem to interrupt their sleep cycle.

I as well have a blue light blub (found in the reptile section) for added heat to my 40 gallon RETF tank and my 29 gallon fire-bellied toad tank. I think they are 40 watt. Now that the house is around 68 now I'm not using them any more.
