Mega-ray, is This Normal?

Is it normal for a mega ray 100 watt SB bulb to 'blink' on and off when it first turns on?
I have them set to turn on while I am still sleeping, but tonight Zola's lights shut off while he was in the tub and I wanted to leave them on a little longer to let him dry out so I flipped the lights back on and it blinked for at least a minute before I decided to shut off the mega-ray and just leave the incandescent light on him.

Re: Mega-ray, is This Normal?

I have had that happen to me to. What I do is usually shut them off and let them cool off then turn them on again. Grizzlys,,Ziggys, Amadeus, and gumby's all do that. The other ones have not ever done it that I have noticed. I have been meaning to look into why they do that,, the Powersun that I used to use only did it a couple of times on me.

So is it normal? I have no idea, lol. However some of mine do the same too.

My husband says it has to do with the built in ballast. Once shut down it needs time to cool, so that the ballast has to cool down to let the light come back on. Its like when the power goes out the street lights will flicker,, it takes time for the power to build back up and they will get brighter and turn back on.

Yeah, megarays are not the only bulbs to do this. I worked in a store which used a type of self ballast overhead light to light the store, they get very warm, and if turned off would take about 10 minutes before you could turn them back on.

Re: Mega-ray, is This Normal?

Yes, its completely normal Lacey. As stated, the ballast needs to warm up. If it is already hot, it needs to cool a bit before it will restart as well.

My mega rays do it as well.

My MegaRay does it too... but I use the externally ballasted model.

Re: Mega-ray, is This Normal?

Okay, just wanted to make sure that I didn't need to box it up and send it back.
