Hahaha actually Merlin I was thinking that I would blow my apartment up... but with my luck it probably would be the entire block. Ironically my dad's an electrician but I didn't inherit any of his talent... instead I inherited my mom's shopping instincts and definitely prefer to just buy something.

I'm going to look for the self-contained units today!

Oh and I do have another question!

I've been reading some about UVB lights and it says not to mount them over top of a fine mesh screen. The screen I have for my cage is about 1/4". If that is to fine, what other mounting methods could you suggesting...

Re: Need a Single Uvb Light Fixture

1/4 inch openings are fine.
Its the fine mesh screen like you have in windows that is the problem.

Okay thank you because that just saved me a lot of worrying! I'm actually on my way out the door now to find the self contained fixture before the bulb arrives in the mail! Thanks for you help! Me and Envie appreciate it tons!

And when you do get the fixture, if it is one has a plastic sheild to go over the bulb, take that out and throw it away!
UVB will not penetrate glass or plastic.

Re: Need a Single Uvb Light Fixture

Yeah I just picked up the light fixture for $9 that came with a regular white fluorscent light and the good part is that once he's all better I can save the uvb light and add the regular light and use it for something else.

So now what would have cost me $80 at petco ended up only cost me $25.

Re: Need a Single UVB Light Fixture

Ahh the joys of dating an electrician. I don't even plug anything in anymore because he's sure i'll try to force the polarized plug in wrong or something. He does all the work. Soon enough he'll ban me from flipping light switches for fear i'll do something wrong. He's gotten a couple good shocks and now has a little too much respect for electricity.
