And Things Were Going So Well...

Gamut has started his first shed since I've had him, and it looks like it's going to be a difficult one.

I noticed him getting whiter over the last couple of days, so I upped the humidity and made sure his nice big tub was filled with water. Unfortunately, this morning I go in, and the shed around his head is gone, but his body's still mostly covered.

Rats, rats, rats.

Checked the humidity and gave him an extra-long misting this morning, and I will do so again tonight. I can still hold out hope that he'll slither out of the rest of it okay, right?

Don't worry, though, I know to stick him in a pillowcase if he can't get the shed off. I'm not panicking by any means. Still, I had hoped we'd have an easy first shed. (Sigh)

At least he is shedding, even if it it's not going as easily as you wanted it to.
Good luck with it, and have a good day!

Re: And Things Were Going So Well...

did he shed the eyecaps? If so I would think you are in the home stretch.

Re: And Things Were Going So Well...

Grey seems to be about right for mine. I don't know if that's the same for them all.

Actually, Liz, that seemed to be the first thing he shed. He shed the skin on his head, and the rest was still on his body.

But it looks like it won't be so bad after all, now. (phew!) This morning he was still surprisingly active. Usually he's asleep before I wake up, but today he was at the top of the cage, moving around, almost like he was looking for something. I misted him down extra long and went away for about an hour to get ready to go to work, and when I got back, most of his shed was bunched up on the end of his perch. He still has a couple of little pieces here and there, but I'm pretty sure if I keep the humidity up a little while longer he'll get the rest of those off.

If he's hunting tonight, I'll give him a rat.

Re: And Things Were Going So Well...

Yeah. The hard part now is getting all those pieces of shed out of there without getting bit. He's not very friendly yet.

Although, he does seem to recognize me. Maybe it's just because I give him food. Boy does he know when I get out the feeding tongs, you can see him just hovering. As soon as the rat's in striking distance, boom.

I think I'm feeding him the limit as far as how big his rats can be, but I was wondering if I should considering feeding him two every once in awhile. He often seems to be hunting just a day or two after I've fed him. I wonder if he's still hungry, or if it's normal behavior. I haven't found much about that, though.
