Re: And Things Were Going So Well...

Boy is he ever active tonight!

He's also exhibiting a behavior I've never seen from him before. It's intriguing.

He's tracking me through the glass. Not meanly. He's not striking, and he's not hunting. He's just tracking me, following me around when I move, and flicking his tongue out the whole time.

Then he'll stretch out towards me, get up all the way to the glass and "lick" it for a moment, then suddenly recoil, then he'll do it again.

He actually did this once, and I moved away to deal with Don Iguan, and Gamut - well the only real word to describe it is - jumped right off his perch to the floor of his cage and started following me around as best he could in his limited space. I mean literally, I move to the left, he moves to the left. I move to the right, so does he.

When I left the room, he climbed back up onto his favorite branch, but as soon as I came back in, he was alert and moving with me again.

It's the strangest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.

It's definitely not his normal hunting behavior, and he just ate last night. Does anyone know what's sparking this type of behavior?

(Not that I'm objecting. This is the funniest thing I've ever seen. But strange, very strange.)

That's what I'm hoping. Maybe he feels comfortable enough now to want to figure out who I am and why I bring him food and water. Who knows?

Most of my snakes do that once they start feeling "at home" I always laugh when my snakes are super curious and think...."thank god curiousity didnt kill the snake"

Re: And Things Were Going So Well...

Ooops I've been gone for a while and missed this thread. I'm glad to hear he's gotten the shed off and that he's eaten and active.
About the eyecaps: all of our 6 GTPs have clear eyecaps and white sheds (the BP has brown-patterned sheds, but also clear eyecaps.) It's often hard to tell when GTPs are in shed, especially the green and yellow ones. They get a bit bluish, but the eyes don't get as milky blue as most other snakes I've seen. The way we can tell if our GTPs are going into a shed is that they get less active: generally staying on the same perch day and night for about a week or more.
As far as the feeding: Martin usually feeds his GTPs 2 smaller rats rather than one big one. Our 3 year old males get about a 46g and a 38g rat about every 10-14 days. The babies get fed every 7 days (usually three 6g mice) and the next day they are hunting again!
The "tracking" is normal for some snakes. One of our males does it when Martin walks by but not with me!
It sounds like you have everything under control. Bummer about the shed, but that happens sometimes. We usually do any cleaning during the day when our snakes are perched -- they don't seem to mind: but if you open the terrarium at night, it better be for feeding or WATCH OUT!

Re: And Things Were Going So Well...

Andrea, you are a fountain of knowledge. That's exactly what Gamut's shed cycle was like. He just got very inactive for about a week before I noticed how discolored his skin suddenly was. I can't tell you how reassuring it is to know my little guy isn't somehow abnormal.
