Feeding the beast

Here's a sight you don't see every day!
Selmak was SO eager for his second fuzzy rat, that as soon as Martin opened the sliding glass door to offer the rat with the tongs, Selmak lunged, caught, coiled and proceeded to swallow the rat while hanging outside the terrarium!

Check out those bottom teeth!

Finished!!! This gives a whole new meaning to having a lump in your throat!

Thank you, Nicole. This is one of the "babies" -- just turned 13 months on Friday. The female is a sweetie, but this little guy is a vicious biting monster! (hopefully he'll grow out of that....)

I guess when you're hungry you grab the food wherever you can. Shows great strength in the tail area. Thanks for the pictures.

I have heard that they are always nippy? I have never had one so I dont know by personal experience, but I have been told they are pretty much look but dont touch.

It depends on the individual snake. One of ours, Crichton, has been a sweetie right from the start: never bitten anyone and he's over two years old now. Lantash, the female, is also very docile (except at feeding time) she's also never bitten.
Aeryn, the older male, was a nasty biter but as he gets older he's mellowed out a lot.
They ARE pretty much "look don't touch" for the first year, because their spines and especially their prehensile tails are quite fragile. And because they tend to bite first and ask questions later... (or just bite first, really). At that age, anything that moves is either food or danger, so that tactic usually pays off!
For me, they are "look don't touch" most of the time because Martin doesn't let me take them out unless they need weighing or some other specific need -- and I have to ask. (He's a VERY protective snake-Dad!)
