Exclamation Broken Tail =( Should I Be Worrying

about 1 cm more than half of his tail broke off =( I was playing with him one day and noticed that it was bent funny, only part of the skin was broken on the bottom, so i took him to the vet and they amputated the broken part, should i worry? Or will it grow back? Can anyone post pictures of a recovering tail, so i know that he will be ok? I feel lik he lost his ability to be so jumpy and do as much adjility as he used to.

How big is the iguana, you say he lost one centimeter, (half) of his tail?
If the vet cut the tail off at the fracture point it should grow back, you should see a small black tip coming through...

one-half cm MORE than half, so just over half his tail.

thank you for getting it to a vet. Your ig will be just fine and it will start regrowing.

Its no big deal, he'll be just fine. You'll notice a black tip regrowing. Before long you wont realize how long it is. I'll get a pic of Brutus' for you.

Generally when they are really little they like to be very 'tail-whippy' Brutus' tail fel culprit to a metal aquarium stand. It was a thin, decorative, and very sturdy metal beam. Not much i Could have done except corn starch his tail to stop the bleeding. All is well now.

Broken tails are almost a fact of life among the iguana community, just watch the tip to make sure it stays clean and doesn't get soft or mushy and make sure that the damage doesn't progress up the tail.

And keep the enclosure scrupulously clean.
The tail may or may not regrow depending on the age of the iguana. Most of them do. The regrowth will look black and rubbery. And will probably not end up looking like the original.
The ig will be a little clumsy at first since the tail is their balancing tool, but will soon adjust.

I have pic's of LaLa's tail in my photo album.
But this is what it looks like now she had 6inches amputated about 10yrs ago. She did just fine after her surgery for dry gangrene. The way it grows back may not look like it would normally.

Like Merlin said make sure everything is very clean, thats really important.

    Good Luck
    Nat & LaLa

Don't let the broken tail get you down. I was so upset when Brutus' tail broke and I was even depressed over it. That says a lot coming from me. I would normal not care, but hey, thats my little dude. I'm sure Kraid will be fine and he would rather not have they long thing following him and getting in the way. (The only benefit I received was no tail whipping, and he is just terrible at it now since it has grown back. LOL )

I know, I know, but it's hard to see something you love injured. =(

Update* I took baby Kraid to the vet and he said it looks good, as long as the tip still feels spongy, it isn't infected. The odd thing about this predicament is that he seems to be more tame. However, i've been noticing he is closing his eyes a lot more now (like he's in pain or something?) but he doesn't attempt to even tail whip me or doesn't wiggle as much when I hold him. Also, he doesn't puff up or try to run (as much, but he still does) whenever I try to touch him or open the cage. It can't be an ilness because he seems active still.

I'm guessing its the response to this medication i've been giving him the past few days (he has a really mild infection, like a scab on his lips, that makes his lips puff out a little)

If this is not the case, has anyone had the same response to a broken tail? I will post up a picture soon.
