? on basking

Ok here is the thing.I leave my basking lights on all night.Do I need to do that?I only know that the care sheets I read only from what I can get from it.Tells me to turn off lights after so many hours.Does that include the basking light.My house stays about 75 at all times.Is it ok to turn off the basking lights after so many hours?My electric bill has went from 170.00 to 300.00 a month for the past 3 months.Dont get me wrong im not asking about the basking because of the electric bill.I just dont know what has made it jump up so high.Probaly due to winter rates,who know's.

A few basking lights will hardly be noticeable on the electric bill.

Usually at our house all the lights go off, to help with the natural cycle of the reptile, as long as you can maintain the requirements for evening temperatures. Ours doubled when we got into reptiles, every time I add another one it costs a little bit more.

Would you like to try to sleep with your bedroom light on all night long?
Iguanas just like us need a dark period to sleep. 12 on and 12 off will be just fine.

Chiming in, I definitely agree with Merlin. You will stress you iguana out if you leave the lights on all the time. A good idea to keep temperatures up at night would be to get a ceramic heat emitter and switch that on when you turn off the basking bulb. This was he will still stay toasty, but he will be able to sleep peacefully.

And believe me, you want them to sleep peacefully!

12 hours on, 12 off here too. Sometimes if breeding season gets a little wild we'll go 10 on 14 off.

And if the enclosure doesn't go below 75 at night, supplemental heat is not needed.

Yes - it is ok to turn off the basking lights at night. I have my ig's lights set on a timer to come on at 7am and off at 7pm. A few minutes before lights out and I hear Einstein moving around to get into his sleep position - he knows exactly when his bedtime is. I also use a Ceramic Heat Emitter at night when necessary.

A light cycle is important for your iguana's health. They will actually sleep a bit better if you let the enclosure cool at night, so no worries about temps dropping into the mid to low 70s at night.
