New UV site is up!

Hi Folks-
Last year a team of herp enthusiasts embarked on a study of reptile UV lighting and how it is used by our reptiles. They performed exhaustive research and testing to come up with absolute values on all the reptile lighting solutions available to date.

This UK team comprised Frances Baines, a retired Veterinary Surgeon, Rob Lane, a well known member of the herp community and our very own Rachel Hitch, Moderator extraordinnaire.

Initially this work was to be published in three parts in the UK publication Reptile Care Magazine. Due to the depth and complication of the complete article, RC decided to scale back the publishing space allowed. After having worked so hard on this research, it was decided that the complete article should be published on line for all to enjoy.

Just this week, the article's site was uploaded and can be viewed here:

http://www.uvguide.co.uk/

This is arguably the best, most complete and comprehensive reptile UV article published to date. It is very well written and easy to understand. Please take the time to look through it and learn all about UV, it's use by our reptiles and the performance of many lamps available in the industry now.

I highly recommend it to those who are not aware of how important ultra violet radiation is to our reptiles.

Thanks to Frances, Rob and Rachel for an exemplary job!

Regards,
Dominick

WOW. Congrats to the research team for a job well done. Thanks for all the hard work. The information is great, thorough and so very important for all herp keepers to to be aware of the importance of UV lightening for the health, well being and longevity of our reptiles etc.

Very cool, thanks for the link Dom, and for the research Rachel! Do you know when the rest of the site will be ready for viewing? Some pages, like the fluorescents and compacts are still under construction. I can't wait to see them.

Very well done, I like the fact that they explain how screen and glass diffuses the uvb, since we always tell our members that screen lids block out uv light, now we have a chart we can refer them to.

it's also a great resource to see the difference in many types of bulbs on the market today. They tested and studied almost all of them!

Thanks guys! Matt, the pages are being updated every day - Frances is working really hard to get the site up and running, she has been the back bone of this study, I really can't take much credit for it, but was proud to be involved in something so huge and so worthwhile. It was very interesting and taught me a lot of things, and hopefully people will take the time to read the entire works and understand UV as it should be understood.
