Re: Feature Implementation - Member Pruning
It isn't the site I think you think it is Merlin. We never worked on the site I am referring to.
I didn't mention their sites name because unlike them, I don't think any site should be discussed on another site in an open discussion area. Its not only rude and ignorant, but it is highly unprofessional. (Especially when the discussion contains blatant falacies.) I implemented this new measure to help aleviate the manual deletion of these users. Every 30-60 days I was removing the users manually that hadn't confirmed their email addies. It was a slow process which is why I didn't do it regularly. With this new feature implemented, Marsha and myself only need to delete those users that join under "spam" names and that we can confirm immediately. Every day I get an email letting me know who, if any, has been sent an email for the 3,5,8, and 10 day notice. This keeps me informed of who hasn't confirmed their email addy and who has been removed as a result. My biggest point I was trying to make to those that view this thread was that HC isn't like other sites. We never have been. We choose to reflect accurate numbers because it best depicts the site and those of us running it. We are a family oriented site and keeping the site clean and safe from spammers is crucial to us preventing our members from seeing inappropriate material. If anyone is curious as to how you can spot a spammer on another site, one of the methpods is pretty simple. If they have an ! before their name, there is a 99.9% chance they were added remotely. They add the ! because it places their name at the beginning of the member list. This allows them to link in their website and since they are at the top of the list, offers a chance to get better exposure. |

Re: Feature Implementation - Member Pruning
I just re-added another feature that we previously had on the site. When a thread has not received a response for 3 months, it is automatically closed now.
This is designed to prevent users from accidentally responding to threads that are months and years old. If you find a thread where the information in the thread isn't sufficient enough to answer your questions, simply start a new thread. We shouldn't see any more threads dating as far back as 2004 from resurfacing. (Unless an admin decides to post in it. At that point, the thread will become active again.) |

Re: Feature Implementation - Member Pruning
You are very welcome Lacey. lol I would have had it back up after the software upgrade, but I was having some complications with another modification I had made to the same file. I spent a few minutes getting the issues ironed out and got it up and running again.

Re: Feature Implementation - Member Pruning
That's great to hear. It was starting to get a little funny, all these old threads suddenly resurfacing with answers to two-year-old questions.

A little late for a reply, but whatever. I think that's a great idea Rich.

Re: Feature Implementation - Member Pruning
Pruning the site is a great idea.
I am a moderator in a Portuguese forum (dedicated to saltwater fish and reefkeeping) that is also beyond the 4000 members mark (around 4400). We have also been doing the same. It is a bit easier with the rules of that forum, because no nicks are allowed. Everybody has to register with their (hopefully real) names and a contact/telephone (only visible to Administrator and Moderators) has to be mentioned in the profile Some just come and go... but a significant number of members visit and post on a daily-to-weekly basis.

Re: Feature Implementation - Member Pruning
Hello,
I never understood why some sites request an address and phone number. Any time I join those sites, I add false information for security reasons and hope that most users do the same. Unless that info is being hashed via MD5 and salted before being inserted into the database, it would be a prime target for a hacker looking to create some advertising lists. It is also a jackpot for molesters, stalkers, and perverts that know how to hack. |
