Music affects behavior?
Well lately ive taken to sitting in my room on a laptop with the music turned up and the other night I had Red hot chili peppers playing, anyways I think it affects my herps behavior. My Bearded Dragons were all over their cage and bobbing and waving, My snake which I barely ever see decided to pop out of his log thing and crawl up the side of the tank, And the box turtle actually decided to come out of its shell and crawl all over the tank. I'm starting to wonder if music really does cause behavior changes for herps, or at least the vibrations. If I go in my room right now everyones activity is rather placid but with music they seem to be alot more active.

My animals are the same way, I used to feed my ACF to the twangy sounds of Johnny Cash, and he would go into feeding hyper drive, and now I feed my iguana while playing my favorite station, it seems to get his attention, he knows food is coming when the radio is turned on.
I think the music confuses them at times though because they here it but can't see where it is coming from.

the Bearded Dragons really like dani california hehe. i know when I had a mullucan cockatoo she liked music but I never figured the interest would transfer over to herps like Bearded Dragons. Whats funny is that right now ive got music playing and I turned it up, and my male beardy just started doing an arm wave that I swear is bobbing with the music. He never arm waves to me, the only thing he ever does to acknowledge me is the dominance head bob, so im starting to think he may actually like the music.

If you stop and think about it herps, and snakes in particular, are very "tuned in" to vibration. In their minds a heavy thump,... thump,... thump,... such as a strong bass line, would indicate to them that something BIG is walking their way! With the bass some music has these days they are probably looking to see when the elephant is coming!
I don't thnk there is a problem as long as the volume isn't too loud. I play a djembe, a large african hand drum, and when my iguana was gravid every time I started playing it she would lay another egg!

i have little emo, reggae, metal heads... but really vibrations play a big role in reptile senses. Snakes feel em along their ventral scales, and pick up vibrations like crazy. It has been studied by some herpetologists that some constrictors feel their preys hearbeat and thats how they know their dead.
i would'nt worry too much but would'nt have music constantly playing. |

isn't it said that music has the power to soothe the savage beast? perhaps there is some truth in that statement
