I think that unless you intend keeping crocs or poisonous spiders there isn't really any restrictions.

Isn't it a capitol crime if your rosemary or thyme gets into your neighbors garden? Sorry< I couldn't resist.

I know the law in northern ireland is just about to have a major shake up.
If you want to keep poisonous snakes.... spiders.... or any dangerous herp you will need a visit and you have to show the unit it will be kept in. This is before a license is issued.
The unit needs to have 2 doors.... ie you need to open a lockable outter door then an inner door to gain access. This unit then needs to be in a locked room.
I also believe you will be background checked as well.
as far as I know this brings us into line with the rest of the UK.
This is info I have been told and may be incorrect but as far as I know its right. ;-)

Ok lets clear some things up here....

at present there are NO restrictions on:

non-venomous snake and some rear-fanged snakes (mildly venomous),
non-venomous lizards (including the big Varanus sp except komodoensis),
anphibians
tarantulas, scorps and other inverts

There are restrictions on

venomous snakes
crocodilians (including caimen)
venomous lizards (gila monster and mexican beaded lizard)
some true spiders
for these you will require a DWA (Dangerous Wild Animal) licence, these cost money and training time etc

To find out about all the DWA restrictions contact DEFRA

*edit* Other restriction come from animals listed on CITIES, these require paperwork and micro chippping.....although any animal you buy that is listed on CITIES should come with these things anyway...it is always good to know what is listed so you can make sure that any animal you purchase come with the correct papers etc

Here is a condesed list of how all reptiles fall into what CITIES annex (I have cut it down to only show the ones where documentation and micro-chipping is required - Annex A....I have the full list of where every animal fall if any one would like me to post it..)

Also, check out what you are wanting to keep isn't listed on the CITES index as needing paperwork - I know some breeds of land toroise require various papers?

And the one thing that needs to be said is Welcome to the world of herping - I hope you get as much pleasure out of keepng herps as the rest of us do
