More bad news in the herping world

Well looks like the city I live in (Vancouver) is trying to put a ban on exotic pet ownership/sales. this could meen that we could no longer aquire new animals or sell ones. this will be devestating to rescues as they will no long ber able to adopt to vancouver residents. also for the many established and respectible breeders in the area. they are talking about a 'grandfather clause" for those who already have them so we can keep them. the town council meeting is this coming tuesday and there will be alot of people from the local club. im hopeing that we can stop this thing in its tracks

There is always someone trying to ruin things! I am sure they got wind of a bad story and jumped at the chance to ban all activity. Good luck with that. You may want to print off the response Rich wrote regarding the Humane Society and herp pets.

Response about Bearded Dragons in Newspaper from the Humane Society

It may have some useful info for your battle. Good luck!

OMG that's ridiculous! I will NEVER understand why some provinces/municipalities feel it necessary to ban ALL exotic animals, it just makes no sense -- it would be different if we were keeping hots or excessively dangerous animals, but a general ban is just a sign of pure ignorance.

Its not so much ignorance as convenience. If ALL exotics are banned the government doesn't have to spend the time and money to hire and train people who actually know the difference between a cornsnake and a cobra.
They just lump everythng under the term exotic and it simplifies things from their perspective.

I hear ya on that one Merlin... I think ignorance and convenience go hand in hand on this one. The people who don't know enough to tell "the difference between a cornsnake and cobra" get all up in arms and go to the necessary officials (who probably don't know the difference either); then, instead of taking the time to do proper research on the general harmlessness of the majority of the exotics that are kept as pets, the powers that be decide to ban ALL exotics... seems to me laziness is a factor in there too...

There goes any LEGAL exotic pet trade business in Vancouver. Just like any thing that is outlawed whether it be guns, drugs, or exotic reptiles, making it illegal to buy, sell or even own ANYTHING opens up a new black market with virtually no one to regulate the way business is run. I hope things work out okay. Good luck!
