Me & My Reptiles

Hi all

As some of you know, I work for a magazine called Reptile Care, which is pretty big here in the UK and is pushing its way into America.

We are running a feature called "Me & My Reptiles" - pretty self-explanatory; it features a reader with pictures and descriptions of their pet reptiles.

So, can you guess what my next question is....? ... Anyone here want to be featured in the mag? I'm putting together the plan for the May issue now, and need to get someone in for then. The article is ideally a double page spread, or single page if not many images are supplied.

I'm *fingers crossed* expecting quite a good response so if there are a few of you interested then that's great and we can line you up for the next few issues.

Contributors receive a complimentary subscription, if that helps to persuade anyone...

Rich - by way of thanks for letting me post this thread I'm sure I could find some way of getting HC's name in there.

*Edit* Sorry, forgot to say,. if anyone is interested please PM me.

Let me talk to the wife about it, we may be interested in doing it, with the kids and all we should be able to fill up some space... Though right now we only have Bearded Dragons (Adults and hatchlings), Leopard Geckos and a Uro...

Hey that's not a problem.. as long as you can provide pics of each of your animals and a paragraph about them all, with a paragraph about yourself and family.

Whoever wants to be involved just let me know and I will tell you what we need and then you can email me whatever you have and we'll go from there.

To everyone who PMed me regarding the Me & My Reptiles article for Reptile Care magazine...

Unfortunately, today I returned home from work to find a letter waiting for me from Reptile Care magazine.. apparently they "can no longer afford to keep me on as Associate Editor" and as of today I will no longer be working for them.

As you might expect, I'm pretty disappointed at this, well I'm very upset actually - I loved the work and I've spent many hours building good relations and friendships with many contributors.

Anyway, this leads me to you guys.. who are in the process of putting together their "me and my reptiles" pieces. I'm afraid guys, I don't know if this will go ahead.. it certainly won't with me anyway of course! If you do still want your pieces featured I suggest you contact the editor, Mark O'Sullivan, at markosullivan@prnmediasales.co.uk - I don't know if he is planning on running this piece as a continual effort, but if he is then he should sort you out. If you do email Mark you will need to remind him about your complimentary subscriptions and give him your addresses.

Alternatively, you can wait until I have lots of capitol and can start my own publication

I'm so sorry and if there is anything I can do to get you printed I will help, although I'm not feeling very generous towards the magazine folk right now! All I can do is sincerely apologise, I was really looking forward to seeing you guys in there. Sorry again.

Rachel you have nothing to apologize for. You had the best intentions. It was something completely beyond your control.

Thanks guys -- Lyn, you're very kind, but please don't not contact them just for me - I know you were looking forward to it. There are other publications that might consider publishing it as well though, just a thought?

Rbl - wow, thanks!! You are too kind, but I will definitely take you up on that if we decide we could start our own. I have a few conversations about this on the go actually, and main problems are; 1. designer, 2. advertising and 3. printing costs.. certainly something I would be interested in.

Cody - great idea. Certainly something to think about.!

Merlin - thank you. Really big thanks, I do feel bad, but it is out of my control. At least I made a lot of good contacts and friends through working for the mag, and I learned a lot as well!

What about digital distribution? Some business models are based on digital formats like PDF and if audience and advertisers like it, you'll have enough money to step up to print format.
To be honest, I believe the digital format can easily surpass the print format and I've seen too many examples of that but they were books and not magazines. Digital format could take care of problem #3. Problem #2 doesn't seem much of an issue in the digital world. Problem #1 is paying or finding a designer?
