This weekend in photos
This weekend we had our state herp club's meeting; it was a Thanksgiving get-together and we had a pretty good turnout. It was at my house in Bismarck this time instead of in Fargo (200 miles east where we usually do it). Lots of fun. Here are a couple of highlights.
My friend Brian drove in with his wife Pam and burm Monty, who happens to be the father of my beautiful little baby. Monte is a real sweetheart and LOVES posing for the camera: ![]() Russell of Keys' Reptiles had an auction-style sale. I scored this pretty little Love-line baby Oketee het for hypo: ![]() Everyone seemed to really dig the new tortoise box I made this weekend. She has 24 square feet of roaming space now, heated floor, nice spotlight, cool branch, pool, etc. ![]() Later Sunday night as the meeting was winding down, Jeff of LostWorld Pets, who was in attendence, seeing how so many people were here from out of town announced he would open the store if anyone was interested. I made a couple of impulse purchases I hope I don't live to regret. The first was a rosehair tarantula, Jeff had a surplus and was selling them at cost. Mine was apparently thirsty as he started drinking like a fish as soon as I got him home: ![]() The other purchase was something I should have thought about a little more, but what the heck, I have the room and wanted to expand and get into other monitors. I picked up a baby Asian Water Monitor he'd just gotten in. I put her on black calcium sand, which in retrospect was a very bad idea. She'll be switched over to newspaper and given a much larger, cleaner water dish. ![]() She also immediately began hunting my baby burm, who was already in the process of hunting her. Interesting interaction, I might have to observe this more: ![]() Hope you enjoyed the pics. All in all it was a great weekend.

Marsha is speechless, and i'm just jealous, that turtle enclosure is awesome! It makes me want to move out really really bad so I can get building on my ultimate iguana house (i've been planning it for 2 years, and I've only been keeping igs for less than a year
) We love pictures, keep on snapping!

Glad you guys liked the pictures. Nothing too special about that tortoise enclosure though, it's actually really quite simple. I used 3/4 inch MDF cut to size. The floor is four feet by six feet, with sixteen-inch high walls all the way around. The walls are at this height because I want the enclosure to double as a large coffee table. Anyway, the box is sitting on a utility rug, which is just right on the cement floor in the basement. Lining half of the bottom of the rug I wound thirty feet of heat cable.
The floor of the box is lined with a large piece of scrap linoleum. The sides are reinforced at all four vertical corners with a 1x4, then lined with one-inch styrofoam insulation. Then I just covered them with a nice patterned heavy wallpaper and got what you see here. It isn't quite finished, I still haven't gotten the top done yet. I'm waiting on another 4x6 board, I'll be cutting a large section out of the middle of it and inlaying a big piece of tempered glass. Around the edges underneath that board I'll mount light and UV sources on timers, as well as an additional heat source. The top will be hinged to allow me access, but when it's closed should serve as a nice coffee table, except instead of books or centerpieces, the conversation piece will be the little redfoot tortoise inside...and maybe a mate! Here's another pic from a different angle so you can see it better. Obviously I need more furniture in there. I've tried a number of different hides, but she ignores them all and always sleeps under that big piece of driftwood. ![]()

I love that burm shot too...he's sixteen years old, and has a wonderfully craggy old face, and the sweetest temper I've ever seen (and they're a mild-mannered snake to begin with).
The tortoise really digs the new box, she comes out every ten or fifteen minutes and does a lap or two. I really need to get some more furniture in there, stimulate her and get her exploring a bit more productively.
