UTH question

I was reading a care sheet on the net yesterday and something caught my eye, and it didn't seem right.
I was reading about Under Tank Heater's, where to put them and so on and so on.
At the end of the section it said that they are about $20 at a local pet store "or" you can use a humans heating pad, this can't be real, or can it, just seems so unsafe!!!!!!! or is that just me!!!!!!!

Hello,

Human heating pads are great for use with sterilites enclosures. You place the sterilite on top of the heating pad and use the built in thermostat to set it to the temperature that works for that species.

By default, they are actually safer than a Under Tank Heater as most have a built in thermostat. (Low, medium, and high)

I will trust the human pad more than the pet made one. If it shorts and goes bad on a human it is a lot more likly the company will face liability. So more safety is built in to the heat pad. If the pet one fries there won't be such an outcry.

I like human heating pads...so does my ig, but I only use them when I have to since iguanas generally get their heat from above.
Taz and Dizzy both knew that when the power went out they got to go on a car ride to my boyfriends, but I couldn't bring all of their bulky lighting with me, so i'd just take the heat pads and put them each up on a shelf and let them sit and be warm and enjoy the view.
When our power goes out it usually takes 1 or 2 days to get it back up again. If it takes longer than that then i'll bring over the lights, but as a temp. solution the heat pads suffice.

I personally use Human type heating pads under sterilites and small aquariums.
I have used them for years without any problems.

Does the heating pad get put under the tank like the Under Tank Heater if I have a 10 gal tank or under the substrate or carpet?

Underneath the tank itself. I put it under 1/3 of the tank so there is an area of the bottom that is not over the pad so the animal can get off of it when it wants to cool down.

Until their lawyers find out you were using it to heat a reptile tank, a use that is not approved by the manufacturer. There are good reasons to use human heating pads, but don't let manufacturer liability be one of them.

What Mark was getting at is there are a lot more stringent safety requirements on products meant for human use than there are for those used for pets.
