Pond in enclosure
Hey everyone I have a question. I have a pond in Iggy's enclosure. I clean it every other day and change the water. I have a filter in it to keep it curculating. My question is how do I go about keeping the water warm?
I have thought about getting a thermostat that you can buy for a aquarium but I am not to sure that it would work. Or I have also thought about getting a human heating pad to put under the pond.. But the pond is rather thick and I am not to sure that the heat would penetrate through the bottom. Here is a picture of his pond. If any of you have a suggestion I am very open for them. Thanks Debbie Iggy Bam-Bam and Miss Zak ![]()

Debbie,,,the only thing I would even think of is one of the Kane Heatpads. With a large Iguana I would be nervous with even those. Cabling would be an issue. I would not even consider an aquarium type. Here's a link to the Kanes to give yuo a better idea

Debbie,
What temp is it at and how much warmer do you want it to be? There are aquarium heaters that you could put in the pond. I don't see any problem with one of those if it was maybe concealed behind some plastic wire cage or something similar, maybe make a false bottom on the pond and put two heaters under that. What is wrong with an aquarium heater? I don't think he would chew the chords nor come in contact with the heater itself which isn't hot enough to cause burns under breif contact. Another thing is that evaporative cooling will keep the water temp alot cooler. If you cover a portion of the pond less would evaporate and the water would probably stay alot warmer. Maybe some floating lily pads or even some live plants (granted Iggy doesn't have a feast on them). A basking lamp over it might work too. The pond looks about 2" thick and probably hollow or filled with foam. Either way I don't think a heat mad will do much good between all that insulation, it would be like heating the other side of your wall to get heat. Unless the bottom is very thin. |

The submersible aquarium heaters are little more than a glass tube and easily broken. Debbie you are overlooking the most obvious. A waterbed heater! By its very design it is intended for use under a vinyl liner covered with water. And being for human use they have to be UL approved.

Why not a regular pond heater to heat the pond, like they do in the northern states, so the pond doesn't freeze solid in the winter?

jem had a point, the pond heaters are just floating heaters usually, one should do . If there was an aquarium heater big enough i'd say go for it....but then you'd have to worry about the iggy atacking it, breaking it, and then getting shocked (much like I did once when I was cleaning the turtle tank)...but that's another story.

Thanks for all of your help guys. Right now the pond is staying at about 70-75 degrees. I change the water every other day but it still is not staying warm enough, Merlin, I never even thought about a water bed heater. That is a great idea. I do have a small heater that sits right behind the filter but it is not really all that great.
When I do the baths for Iggy it is usually around 95 degrees sometimes a little warmer I would loke the pond to stay at about 95 to 100. Do you all think that is to hot for him? I mean the pond is smaller than a bath tub. What do you think? Debbie iggy Bam-Bam and Miss zak
