fire bellied toad

Hi. I went to the pet store to get a tree frog. I was going to get a cuban but then I seen the fire bellies. I'm happy to say that he is now at home safe and sound. I think that I have everything that he needs. I have a 10 gal tank with potting soil and moss with alittle bark chips. I have a log for him to hide under and a water bowl (big enough for him to soak in.) I also have a tank heater on the back of the tank, a water bottle for misting and reptisafe for the water. I want to know can they give you warts? He peed on me and I am alittle worried. I still have to name him. I was looking at other tank setups and I see that they put half water and half land is that what I should do? The temp is around 82 degrees with out the heater on do you think that he needs the heater? And should I heat the water? I just want to learn as much as I can so he can stay happy and healthy. Also someone told me that I should have two because he will get lonely and die? I have his tank setup next to my roommates brown snake tank and they seem to notice each other. They both went to the side of their tank that is next to the others tank. Thanks for all your help. mark

congrats on the new addition. And no he cannot give you warts. That is an old wives tale that people have sworn by for ages.

Did a person from the petstore tell you to get a cagemate? They just want you to bye another one and get more money. He's fine by himslef. I'm sorry I can't help on anything else I don't know much on firebellies

Mark,

Glad to say that you cannot get warts from frogs, toads, etc.! Warts are caused by a virus, or stress. But I had a good laugh! Good luck with the fire bellied toad!

Yeah growing up I was told the same thing about toad pee causing warts.
If it was really true I would have been in BIIIIIIIIG trouble.
Its a fable.
And no they don't need a friend.

Although a water bowl is enough for a tree frog, a fire-bellied toad would do better with a half water/half land enclosure, they like more water. Your tank is plenty warm, so you can turn off the heater. If its already 82 degrees without it, you'll probably overheat the toads if you leave it on. Heating the water is unecessary. You do have a screen lid right?

Most amphibians aren't very social, however, fire-bellied toads are an exception. They see strength in numbers, and are more secure living in a small group. This is one of the few cases where you'd actually be better off with more than one. He won't get lonely and die though. As far as I know, only birds will get depressed enough to die when housed alone. In a 10 gal, I wouldn't get any more than 2 toads though.

As the others said, you won't get warts. However, fire-bellied toads are poisonous, so handling should be kept to a minimum. Plus is stresses them out anyway.
