Counting scales
How sure do you think is scales counting method for sexing snakes?I just tried it on my Sina's skin, and if it's a sure method, she defenetly is a girl!!
I will try it with my other babies after their next shed. This method is really fun to do and if it really works you never need to probe again!! ![]() |

Thats a new one...I've never heard that. To my knowledge,,,probing is the only sure way to verify the sex.

I have never heard that either. The closest thing I have heard like that is that the distance a probe goes in "X" number of scales for a female and "X" number of scales for a male.

It's very strange that you never heard of scale counting!!I heard and read it many times on the internet and in books how to do it,but never really if it's safe to be sure.
You have to count the two rows of scales between the vent and the end of tail. It's much easier on the skin as on the live snake. When you count 130 or less it's a girl, 140 or more, it's a boy.But then it also can be between 130-140 and these can be either.I guess when that happens you need to probe. Anyway,it is a much used method and I just done it with my sinaloan.I knew before that she was a girl and counting the scales is more proof.Next time I speak to my ball python breeder or the snake lady from the shop,I ask how safe this method is.I keep you posted about it! I can't believe it,you actually learned something from me for a change;because I'm here to learn from you guys, lol! But believe me,it is a sexing method.Maybe the European members know about it when they read this thread? Some vets sex them by taking blood,so I read somewhere. |

I find this post pretty funny if I do say so myself. Most snakes do not even have 100 sub caudel scales. This Can Not be done to determine sex, whoever told you this had to much free time on there hands and in there mind...

Hello,
Jacky, look at it like this. most of us have owned snakes for years past. If we have never heard of this method, odds are, it isn't a proven technique. Could you lead me to the sites that are displaying this method for sexing? I also want the book titles you mentioned. I would like to look further into this. If this technique is proven, it would be a valuable asset for sexing. Please post your resources. |

Sorry,I forgot to mention that those figures only apply to corn snakes.Other snakes have diffrent figures. And I also forgot to mention that it's the belly side that you need to count.Rich,I got it from a German book about corns! And also the snake lady at my reptilr store said so,and she keeps also snakes for years, but I will check with her and ask her for which snakes it also can be used,or if it's just for corns! I keep you posted on that!
