First of all,,,,welcome to Herpcenter Falcon,,,,we're glad you joined. As far as Mod rules....there are non posted. They are based on the needs of the site (as in when another mod is needed) When one is candidates are based on knowledge, personality, how much they are active on the site and how well they interact with the other members. When the HC staff decides another mod needs to be added we conference together, suggest a few names, and pick one by consensus. At that time we will ask the perspective candidate to supply a brief essay on there involvement in herps and why they should be considered for the position. At that time the staff will vote and decide. I know this may seem stringent and tedious compared to other sites but here at HC we strive, and feel, that we have the best staff on the net, as I believe most of our members agree. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions or concerns

Oooops,,,after re-reading,,,,I realized I never answered you main question. No there is no set concrete rule that you CANT be a mod on another site. However, which site you are affiliated with makes a difference. Any shady, ill reputed or sites that bash on orhave issues with HC is frowned upon. SPeaking of myself,,,,I disassociated myself with a few other sites on the basis that I did not want a conflict of interest noe did I want the issues of contending sites to come into play. I decided to go with the best site.

The rules regarding mods are not posted on the general forum because it has no bearing on the general membership. However they are discussed with potential mods during the process of choosing them. Each individual that is considered for a postion is dealt with on an individual basis and we look at a lot of different things.

We go to great lengths to be sure that we have the best mods of any forum and that they will be responsible and deal with every member fairly.
I think we have succeeded.

Welcome to HC, Falcon2891!!!

Thanks for explaining that, Ken and Merlin...I'd wondered about that myself. And you're right, HC has the most wonderful staff and is absolutely the best forum on the internet!

Hello,

Seeing as I know where this question stems from, I will also like to add my "2 cents" to this.

Mods are not "asked" to be mods when we are looking at them. We choose prospective mods, as mentioned above, by how active they are on the site, how they interact with the members, how they "present" themself, knowledge, etc. Knowledge of reptiles is not always a leading factor when choosing a mod. It is a benefit, but it is not a deciding factor. We have great members with varying levels of knowledge that assist one another with their questions and concerns.

We may discuss potential mods for several weeks before we approach them. Sometimes, potential mods show an interest on working within the network with an email, PM, or IM. Sometimes those individuals are discussed, and other times, they remain in a thread we have for possible future discussion.

When we decide on who we would like within the network team, we take everything into consideration. Where do they currently mod, how do they act on other sites, how often are they on HC, how do they interact with other members, are they a "liked" person or are they arrogant and come off as such. There are a ton of things we take into consideration.

A moderator on HC is someone that is looking out for the best of the site. With the growth of this site, and the future growth of our other sites and future sites, we need mods that can dedicate themselves to assisting with the network. Mods that operate on different sites have a hard time "keeping up" as issues are always arising. So, we may end up with a moderator that has issues they are dealing with on another site, and they may fail to be present on this site do to those issues. Unfortunantly, we are not looking for part time moderators. This site is maintained the way it is because of consistency. A majority of the time, one of our staff members is on site. If something arises, they have the ability to contact the other mods, via PM,IM,or by telephone if needed and get things sorted.

How we run this site and the "rules" we deligate behind the scenes are just that, behind the scenes. We have a private forum that we use to discuss the network and it isn't public for a reason. If we posted everything we discuss and how we can improve ourselves and the sites, there would be a number of sites that would "replicate" how we do things. We are unique, and we are original. It is our contention to remain this way.

In addition, our staff is compromised of equal parts. Everything we do is decided amongst us. There is no delegating authority amongst us. We are a team. Decisions that effect the team or the sites are taken to heart and everyone has a say. Its how we do things, and from our experiences, it is what works for us.

There is also the issue that Ken brought up. There are some sites that have ill reputations and don't maintain the atmosphere that HC wants to endorse. As such, we "prefer strongly" that our team members exempt themselves from sites like that.

If we have a team member modding a site that isn't "favorable" in the public eye, or has had some bad situations surrounding their behaviors, spamming, etc., it is a reflection of us. In essence, the team is a reflection of the sites they maintain. So if I were to mod on a site that other sites frequently discuss or belittle, and I also mod on this site, it is a fair assumption that eventually this site will be drawn into the negative light that the other is.

There is no "set in stone" rules for our mod team. We work together and make decisions as we progress. They don't need to be in writing as the team we have now is currently on the same platform. We communicate and we have established some rules that we "know", and we alter them as needed.

In whole, we do like our staff to be dedicated to the network. We prefer to keep our staff within the network. This helps us to avoid any negative publicity, or future negative publicity. It also maintains a level of competence. We know that we can rely on one another if something were to arise. We trust that each of us has the same goal in mind, and that is to display a level of integrity and maintain a network of sites that are friendly and open to everyone that wants to also remain friendly and share information with others looking for the same thing.

We don't post everything, because certain things are on a "need to know" basis. They are private, because the members don't need to know them. (Until they are approached for a moderator position. At that point, they indeed are obligated to learn how we work together.)

Hopefully this answers everything you wanted to know.
