I know, I know. I guess I am just over reacting. It is just real hard to keep things running when things just keep messing up. Mods leaving, people threatening to sue because of copyrights that were not even copyrighted, people cheating on photo contest to get free t-shirts. It is all just mind boggling.
Jay I understand that you were a mod here before you were on mine. And maybe having to moderate here and there was hard. The thing is the day you and venus quite kinda caught me by off guard. I had no idea of how you felt about the content on the forum. It just turned into a bad deal. I mean, I was left with one mod when you both left and nothing but a cloudy message of how you were leaving. But that is all water under the bridge. I have new mods that are doing a great job. Ok all I am getting down to is if you did not want to be a mod anymore that is fine I understand. But you could at least still be a member and help people out with questions. This is a great forum I am sure people can find out all that they want to know about their herps, but sometimes people are interested in other thing like music, movies or other things and want to make that connection with other herpers. |

Unless its something that the entire team feels will make this site even better for the members! Quote:
But thats also the problem. There are other sites that deal specificly with those subjects were they can post. On the whole people come to a herp site to talk and learn about herps, not who bought what CD or went to see what movie with their friends. If I was cruising around and came upon what was supposed to be a herp site and all I saw were posts on who is the best rapper or what movie star did what, I would assume it was nothing but a bunch of kids playing around and go elsewhere. If you want a site to succeed you need to either focus on your subject and keep it focused or change it into a "Whatever You Want To Talk About" site where you just go to chat with your friends about whatever. It is next to impossible to try to do both and be taken seriously.

Hello,
Quote:
Once you get things in order though, and you acquire a system that works for you, it isn't so tedious. You deal with each problem as it arises, and move on. HC has dealt with a number of situations. We too have had mods leave us, and we have dealt with people cheating in the contests, etc. It's expected, or at least should be expected. Any material that is used on your site should be explicity written by you or your users and should be protected by copyright. If you didn't write it, and didn't get permission to use it from the author or copyright holder, you shouldn't use it. Herp Center is my legal business name. As such, I have a legal copyright for everything that falls under my business name. This includes any sites listed within the network, and ALL images and info on those sites. It's the safest way to protect yourself, and for others to protect themselves. Quote:
It's a system that doesn't seem to work.(at least not for us.) Serious herpers want to read and discuss reptiles. Those that don't, can visit those sites that allow all the off topic posting. That is the beauty of the internet. There is a selection of sites for every personality and character out there. If one site doesn't work for a member, they can move on to another site until they find one that meets their needs. HC isn't for everyone, and we know that. We are not looking to cater to "everyone". We are here for those that want info in a friendly environment. We have had people leave this site because they didn't like that we didn't allow all the off topic posting. That's ok though. They moved on, and we did too. There are a number of sites on the net that most of us use to belong too and frequent regularly. We helped answer posts, welcome members, etc. When you think about it, why spend our time on those sites answering posts when you can do the same thing on your own sites? With 3 sites that are visited and being posted on, we could easily keep ourselves busy posting on those sites. If we find that we have some "down" time, but still want to do something within the network, we have a ton on information being worked on in the background to help improve these sites and those in development. The knowledge that the mods have is best served "first" within the network to their members. After all, they put this work in to create it, why not make sure that it is their members recieving their knowledge? I am not saying that the mods can't post on other sites. If they want to, and have the time to, by all means...spread awareness. I am just going on my philosophy. Basically, why would new members come to HC if they could get the same answers on your site or other sites? It's a situation where the "time" factor again comes into play. We first post within the network and then if time permits, we all have the option of posting elsewhere. For me, that option is maybe 2 days out of the month when I decide to take a break. On top of that, there are members within the network that have a vast amount of knowledge of varying species. They answer and post just as frequently as the mods for the same purpose. They found that they enjoyed the HC sites and how they are run, so they visit regularly. Mods are not "know it alls" in the field of reptile husbandry. We too rely upon our members for their knowledge of species that we don't own or have researched. It's a trade off. We offer the site and maintain it, help with posts when we can, and the members help each other and us by posting and asking/answering questions between each other. Its our job to maintain the site. The answering of posts is a benefit but its the members that "make" the site what it is. |
