New Horney Toads

I just got a pair of Horney Toads-Spontanious buy at a pet store because my son fell in love. I can't find much information on them. They are very docile and they look healthy. Does anyone know where I could find more care info. about horney toads. If I had their real name that would help too. Thanks

Are you talking about horned lizards or horned frogs? Horned lizards are genus Phrynosoma, and are the "horney toads" of the old west. Horned frogs (aka horned toads, pacman frogs) are genus Ceratophrys.

There are several species of horned lizards that range in size and distribution. Various species can be found as far south as Texas and as far north as North Dakota (I've caught one in each of those states too ). In captivity they usually don't do so great because in the wild their diet consists primarily of ants. They need dry, semi desert habitat. Sand or bone-dry dirt, rock, and some branches should decorate the cage. Temperatures are similar to that for bearded dragons, and like the Bearded Dragons, they need UVB lighting.

Horned frogs are from South America. They don't do much, except eat. A humid enclosure with deep substrate for burrowing, like soil, is needed. A small dish of water should be provided too. One they can sit in, but not deep enough to drown (they're crappy swimmers).

Cool lookin little guys You can't get a picture of the head and body from above though can you? I'm trying to ID your species. There are at least 12 species of horned lizards that I know of, and I can rule out all but about 3 of them. I would consider a texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum), but the horns just don't quite seem to match, cause the 4 longer ones all appear to be about the same length (in a TX the 2 rear ones are much longer than all the others). Then I'd say you have a coast horned lizard (P. coronatum), but I'm less familiar with this species. The last species I'm considering is the desert horned lizard (P. platyrhinos). So far, with the horns, markings behind the head, and the very blunt snout, this seems to be your best candidate, but I'm not 100% sure.

Look to be Deserts to me.
Antsalive.com should be able to accomodate your harvester needs.

They're beautiful....a little skinny though (hip bones are showing).

But, in your hands, they'll be fattened up in no time. Zane gave you a great website to order clean pesticide free ants for your precious pair. Good luck....
