Spider Bites!

Yesterday my sister went to see a friends new property and got bitten by some spiders. They bothered her a bit but she didn't think too much of it. Later they swelled and started hurting eventually sending her to the hospital. The doctors said that the bites were not from a Black Widow or Brown Recluse and really didn't seem to know what kind had bitten her. They treated her and sent her home. She is doing a lot better now. Now the reason for me typing all this is to ask if anyone has any idea what type spider it could have been? They were never seen so we have no clue what they looked like.

All spiders are venemous, and with any venom a person can have an allergic reaction no matter how toxic or mild it is. Without actually seeing the spider identifying it is going to be a guessing game. I'm glad she is ok, but she may want to get tested to see if she has severe alergies to venom. A bee sting could be fatal if that is the case.

Yeah I was going to post the same - all spiders are venomous, and an allergy could cause a reaction. E.g. tarantula bites don't affect everyone but if you are sensitive to the venom it can cause painful swelling, temporary paralysis, and so on. As Jay said, a bee sting could cause death for someone who is allergic, and your sister's reaction suggests she does have a sensitivity.

On the other hand, yuk, spider bites!!!!!

Amen to that Bitis. ever notice how a spider can be on the ceiling for hours untill you spot it then it has to move in your direction.

Well I'm phobic about spiders so you can guess how I reacted! I used to shoot spiders until my wife (we were just married) saw me grab my black powder pistol aim and shoot one. I was then forbidden from shooting any more. I even kept the gun loaded with spider rounds (1 foam ear plug, 1 grain black powder and cap). All I have to do is to say: "Where is my pistol?" and she yells out: "Don't you dare - I'll kill it!"

Oh, I passed on the idea about my sister getting checked out about bee venom to my mom. She will be getting tested soon or never hear the end of it!

LOL Steve!! Too true

I'm an arachnophobe, although I have come a long way and manage to comfortably live in my house with the Ts! I'd never kill a spider though - I'll have someone put them outside, but I can't kill them.

I whole heartedly agree! If she had that bad a reaction to simple spider bites (other than the baddies) it is something to be concerned with. Growing up I had a friend that had to carry medication with him everywhere. A simple bee sting could send him into anaphylactic (sp) shock. His throat would close up and he couldn't breath! This is important!

Rachel, wasn't you that posted a thread some months ago where you expressed your anger against spring because there were a lot spiders roaming around your garden? =)

I know in my mind that spiders (most) won't kill me, but in my heart I know it's either the spider or me! I just can't help it.

My sister will go get tested if for no other reason than to have Mom stop bugging her.
