Wanted:a snake!

As I soon need to part from my fishbabies (they are now big enough to be sold;actually, one of them is already breeding!),I would have an empty fishtank, which I thought I could change into a terrarium.

I wanted a california kingsnake, and now I'm looking for people on this site and your experience with them, because I read many times that they like to bite a lot! Then I also read that they are nice snakes who feed from out of your hands and get very tame!

But as I haven't found a breeder yet,I'm open for other ideas what to put in that tank! it's 2' high, and two sides are about 3'long with a bow front (it's a corner tank,350 liters).First I wanted to use it as a Waterdragon swimingpool, but it would make a nicer home for a snake!(And my excuse to get another one, lol)!

Your ideas are very welcome!

Our Cal king is the only snake I have that has routinely bitten me. however my other half, who the snake technically belongs to, handles her without incident.
Maybe the snake just doesn't like men!

I am temporarily, I think, housing a California King snake and it has never struck at me. I can't say that the snake knows me because it was full grown when I got it. Maybe they bite a lot when they are babies like young burms tend to do.

Unfortuantely this snake is a couple of years old. It never struck at me when it was little.
Maybe waiting til it was big enough to get a good grip.

Jacky,

We have had a Cal. King since January, and although I do not hold it too often (although my wife does) it has never bitten me or her. I guess it would depend on the personality of the snake. Like people, they are all different!

Thanks guys.Yes,I really think now it's a personality thing.
What's another good snake to keep in that kind of enclosure I mentioned above? Any ideas? A cali-king is not so easy to get over here,I just learned, but not impossible, but I'd like an option.

I find that hard to believe Jackie, how far from germany are you? They have one of the biggest European shows at Hamm and guarrented to get one there, you will also be tempted with loads of other things there too It really is worth the trip, make a weekend of it we plan to do so at some point

Our Cali King has never bitten us, it has musked a couple of times and man does that smell!! lol As a general rule he is very good natured, can be a bit flighty but normally ok.

As for things that can go in your tank...rather than think what will go in it think about what you would like to go in it....this way you know you have the animal that you want rather than something that fills a space you have.

The space is perfect for a snake the size of a cali king.....so maybe you could look at some of the asian rat snakes, these generally get longer but more slender (loads of variaty), small pythons or boas (ground boas, childrens pythons, dwarf boas.....). If it is still a colubrid(sp) you are after then maybe you could look at milk snakes (I know these are very popular in Europe), other types of king, maybe the gray banded kings, one of my faves...

My advise would be to take your time and look around...the possibilities are endless...well almost If you can make it to one of the german shows I would recommend it as there will be a wealth of knowledge from some very experienced breeders and it will be a fun weekend.

You are right Joe,of course I need to get a snake I want, not one that suits the tank, but the trouble is,I want them all!!lol!
I thought if I hear some ideas,I find the one I want first.
Well, the thing with Hamm is,it's quite far away from my place, and the paperwork to get them through custom, and the custom duty and everything,it's quite complicated,I think.Or am I wrong? And we don't have a car!

I'd love a children's python,but don't they need more space?

Don't we all lol

I can't help on the swiss customs, can't even remember if your part of the EU? If you are then it is just the same as buying an animal in switzerland, for all CITIES stuff you will need papers but apart from that should be them same, wheather or not the customs people know that or not is a different matter... I know you don't have to pay import or anything for germany to the uk.

An adult would be fine in tank that you described, they top out at 4ft long...

Well,we are still not in the EU;I wish we were, then it would be easier for me to move to England and get a job there! That's what really annoyes me; we here in Switzerland have to accept the germans and the french to work here, but we swisspeople are not allowed to work in their country!!!

A children's python would really be nice to have, but I never seen one over here.I have to look it up ,how easy or difficult they are to get in Switzerland.
