Quite disturbing!

I don't want to sound too weak or anything, but I read on a german forum where they had a discussion about a Sinaloan milksnake only wants to it pinkies, that the girl left a live fuzzy in the terrarium for 3 whole days!!! Personally I find this very cruel!!
Mice are animals too!!
The girl said that she puts the baby back to its mother after the snake still hasn't eaten the baby mouse!
What do you think about that?Do snakekeepers need to be so cruel?!

It kept for 3 days without the mother ? I didn't think a fuzzy would last that long. That is kind of cruel, one reason why we only use f/t.

I personally have a problem with feeding live animals unless it's completely necessary - that is the snake will die without food and won't eat f/t, like many hatchling snakes are prone to do.

People often say to me that it's natural for a snake to eat a live mouse or rat, but I disagree- in captivity it isn't natural, as in the wild the prey would have a chance to get away, plus it just isn't necessary a lot of the time.

What the girl on the forum is doing is absolutely wrong - 1) it is cruel to the rodent, and mistreatment of an animal; something for which, at least in this country, she could be punishable for - the mouse/rat is an animal too, and if not killed straight off and eaten by the snake, should be removed, and IMO killed humanely - putting it back with its mother causes it torment and by leaving it in the snake enclosure for three days, she is in effect starving it.

Also, in the case of the snake, what will this girl do in several months time when a fuzzie is too small for the snake? - feed it something larger and leave it in the enclosure unattended for three days, where if not eaten it could actually kill the snake??

Disgusting, but sadly a fact of life for some people. All you can do is try and advise her against doing what she is doing. But it will probably fall on deaf ears

The girl said even though the snake is already about 70cm (2'4") long,it refuses to eat feeders with fur on it! She was asking what to do and if she should feed pinky rabbits or pinky guineapigs, because they are bigger.

She also said her snake seems to be afraid of anything furry!Ever heard of something like that?!?!

i have never heard anything like that,my corn was a bit leary with his first furry mouse, but I just jiggled it around and he took it.i think if she but a little more effort in to it the snake would take it

Yes, if the snake will not take 'fuzzed' food items then you should obviously switch to something larger that the snake will accept i.e. Rabbit pinks. GPs are born with fur - Last I checked..

Now, if the pups are rather large for the snake (I don't deal in a lot of colubrids and I assume they aren't all built like Thamnophis) then I would stick with several smaller food items, such as rat pups, which are bigger than mouse pinkies yet smaller than Bunny pups.

Also, tell her to experiment; some snakes prefer one animal from another, it may not be just the fur, but maybe just larger mice..

Exactly...like one of corns who will take fuzzies (mice) without a fuss, but refuses adult mice. Strange, isn't it?

Not so strange actually, it's quite common - snakes are fussy! But she really should re-think the way she is going about feeding her snake, I find it extremely distressing, as well as cruel and unnecessary.

Well,I told that german girl what you guys think about feeding live, and she said to me that it's her own business what she does and how she does it,and if we are not able to feed live, for whatever reason ,we should think about if snakes are the ideal or the right pet for us!
Oh,and she she doesn't keep the same fuzzy in the cage for three days,it's always another one for a whole day!She just wrote it wrong!
So according to her,we all have chosen the wrong kind of animal!!She thinks it's natural to feed live!
Well,if she has a dog,she should take him outside to the garden and let him chase a rabbit! That's natural!

I've long stopped visiting other reptile forums, especially the Swiss and German ones... the ignorance and arrogance of the people are just too frustrating!
I find them very antagonistic: questions are laughed at, comments are argued with just for the sake of arguing -- and I don't know where the people get their reptile care info from, but it seems all hopelessly out-dated and abusive.
At first I thought I could try to "re-educate" some people, but I just ended up getting depressed and angry.

So now I only converse on this forum!
