sealant?

I wanted to mount acrylic to my pre-existing aquarium, the problem is I dont know what to use to seal it up with. It also has to be able to support some pressure, it will be holding back about 3 gallons of water!

1) I've heard that the 100% silicon sealant does not stick to acrylic, is this true?

2) What is another safe sealant, that is sturdy and preferably clear?

3) I need to seal wood, should I just use a silicon wood seal?

4) Should I avoid sealants with moldacides and fungicides? i've heard that these can be
harmful to reptiles!

5) If I use General electric black silicone sealant, in order to cover up the false bottom, does it go inside or outside the tank?

Thanks for any help

Hi Chronic!

Here's what I'll tell you what I've learned in my experience;

100% clear silicon rubber sealant is probably ideal for your situation. Acrylic latex sealant is not as strong and doesn't last as long (for your application), just so you know. 100% Clear Silicon Rubber will stick to acrylic plastics. In fact, it will work on a 135 gallon aquarium.

If you're sealing wood, the 100% clear silicon rubber seal will work as well. There are other options (say, if you went to Lowe's) you could inquire about in the Paint Dept there.
Yes, avoid moldacides and fungicides. Reptiles may eat at it, which brings me to the next point. If you're going to go with General electric black sealant to cover the false bottom, put it on the outside of the tank, if at all possible (but prob not, if I understand you correctly). But I highly recommend staying only with the clear rubber sealant, as it can be used on both the inside and outside.

There's a brand Lowe's carries called "Dap." It's called "Dap All-Purpose Indoor/Outdoor Clear Rubber Silicon," which comes in caulk tubes, liquid nail sized tubes or smaller squeeze bottles. It also fights mold and mildew, and of course, has a waterproof seal. Just be sure to apply it liberally and test it for leaks before putting all of the water in. Good luck!

Thanks DRD just the info I was looking for.
As for the black silicone to conceal the false bottom, I think I might just leave it, maybe cover it with plants outside the cage, its gonna look kind of goofy with a big black smudge on about 1/3 of the tank . Maybe ill just stuff moss on the side of the aliflor pellets to make it more presentable!
As for inquiring at the pant dept, everywhere I go I either get someone willing to sell me anything to make a buck or the complete opposite. Ill say I need it for a "lizard tank" to make it simple, and they'll say "OOOO well you might want to try a pet store." I get that response at nurseries while looking for plants as well. At least they dont act like they know what they are talking about. One guy tried to sell me IVY and dumb cane saying they was perfect for lizard tanks. Good thing I knew they were both poisinous to cats, theres no way either are going in with my geckos.
Well as I said pics are on the way and my website should be updated as I go.
THanks a ton drd
