Can't Fix Humidity Levels!!!

What in the world is going on here? I have a 55 Gallon Python tank that just wont keep a high humidity level. It averages about 40% and I have read that is too low. I have sprayed it over and over again and it still won't go up. It jumps to 80% then drops shortly after (15 mins). I have even tried dumping water on the substrate, but still no help.

Evaporation works better over a wide surface area, so with a large tank water evaporates faster. Although you should have a screen lid, covering some of it would help. Adding a humidifier would certainly help too, and live plants give off moisture.

Tanks are NOT the greatest enclosures. With the screen lids, they lose too much heat and humidity.

A custome enclosure would work better, but if you want to work with what you've got... Try covering 90% of the screen with cloth, plastic, or something else suitable.

Good luck!

PS, What type of python are you housing in it?

This is a common problem in winter. The heating in our homes just pull all the moisture out of the air. As Brent suggests try covering part of the top with something. I use a peice of plexiglass. make sure to leave an airspace at each end though so that you still have airflow or you will end up culturing all sorts of nasty fungus!
What are you using for the substrate? I have found that regular cypress mulch (NOT the dyed stuff) from the garden center holds moisture better than aspen. If you are using just paper or reptile carpet it makes it more difficult.

brent and merlin are right, try and cover the middle of the tank with something like saran wrap. i've tried it in the past and it worked beautifully. you might have to work with it to see how much you need to cover to get the desired humidity but it'll work. good luck!

Hello Guys. I am using a baking sheet on top and it helps trap some Humidity/Heat. I am using Reptile Bark for the bedding(substrate). There are 2 Ball Pythons in this tank.
