iguana painting and a ?
here is a preview of my mother's painting of an iguana on a slate. it is still unfinished, and the reflection from the flash washes it out a little, but you get the idea. it will be for sale at the manchester, nh herp show in april.
my question is...she usually paints ivy and flowers and things around the edges, but I think that might detract from the iguana. i was thinking that something should be on the bottom, though...we were thinking "welcome" or something like that...maybe with some ivy around it. i would please (and she would, too) love any suggestions on this matter.
thanks,
lola

wow that looks wonderful I hope I can paint reptiles that good someday
hmm im not sure about the bottom. maybe a "Welcome" that sort of made of the vines and leaves, though I dont know how that would work or how hard it would be

THAT is awesome! "Welcome" sounds good, or maybe she can personalize with a last name it at the show. Not sure if taking the paints is feasible, though.

Lola that is beautiful. Cant wait to see more work. Maybe some ivy in the corners only would be cool.

Hello,
That is a beautiful rendition of an iguana. Tell your mom I said so too. That is some commendable work. She is very talented.
I personally can't paint with real paints, but I am pretty decent with computer painting, lol. I did up a rendition of the picture with a "Welcome" on the bottom as well as some ivy falling from the left side as an example of how it could look with ivy involved. Obviously, this is just an example, but I think that the ivy looks nice and compliments the iguana.
and here is an over and under rendition with the same plant.

VERY nice!
It's a beautiful painting, Lola ... my compliments to your mom.
I sometimes have to do "floating head" portraits, too... but I always end up with the same question: "shouldn't there be something ELSE?"
Now I try to avoid that problem by going from more detailed to loosely sketching in the rest of the shoulder or chest, etc. If you make parts of it really sketchy, people tend to appreciate the detail of the face more and the work it takes to get there!
Unfortunately I'm not that skilled drawing with a computer mouse (like drawing left-handed: weird!!), but I tried just to give you a rough idea what I meant.
(Or you could just use the idea at the top of the page and have the iguana holding a Herp Center sign!)

Lola that is amazing! It is one of the best renditions of an iguana I have ever seen!
Personaly I would keep it simple. The ivy that Rich did running down both sides of the Ig are nice or maybe a simple wreath encircling the head. Much more than that will clutter it and detract from the image.
And that image definately deserves to be the center of attention!

thanks everybody! i can't for my mom to check herpcenter and read all of your posts.
this message has a reply to most of you, so...
rich: i like the ivy, too. the first one I like better, with the ivy only coming down around the neck, but it seems unbalanced that way. i don't know if my mom would go for it, though...it is so scary to try an add something new on top of something you have already done that has come out so nice. maybe some soft wisps of ivy? or maybe just some decorative ivy in the corners, like marsha suggested?
blackjack i think your idea is great, too...but I think it might take away from the simplicity of it. if it were on a canvas then I would agree it might need more. your art is beautiful, by the way...
i agree that welcome is probably the best word to put on there...i was also trying to come up with as another option something like...instead of "home sweet home" something an iguana might say, but it all seems either too long or too cheesey to me.
merlin: a wreath! hmmm...hadn't though of that one.
and last but not least...lyn: i was thinking $60 for the slate, but my mom might think it's too much. she underestimates herself. if you are sure you would really like it, i can have her personalize it for you...it would be nice to meet you at the show, whether you buy it or not!
i think a ball python might be the next slate...i wanted a snake one, too.
