What a crappy birthday for that kid. I can't believe his arm had to be cut like that, all the way up to the bicep. That is just incredible. If you look closesly you can see the necrosis, and watch it slowly lessen as you move away from the bite.

Poor kid, but why didn't rescue come in and get him? I don't understand the 4 hour delay in treatment to walk him back to the trailhead. I hike all the time and there are always areas that have enough helicopter access, even if it can't land it can still pick you up.

i have played with rattlers ever since I was about 9 years old. i find it amazing that neither I or my dogs were ever bit by anything but a 6 foot bullsnake that we came across in october of 2004.
i miss the rattlers all over the place. they are fascinating! my mom nearly had a stroke the first time I brought a 4 foot mojave rattler home to show her, lol. i had the 'nothing can hurt me' attitude.

i have a rattlesnake, even though he is a pygmy you never know how your body is going to react to venom. i have asthma and I cant even deal with cricket dust let alone some venom. after those pics im REALLY considering getting rid of my little guy.

Holy Cow!!!! You'd think that the rangers at Yosemite would keep some form of anti-venom in stock! I don't remember reading anything about that being used. Diamondback Rattlers are VERY common in California and you'd think they would have been able to deal with it more efficiently before things progressed that far!
Poor kid -- he seems to have a REALLY great attitude about it though.
Thanks for posting Cody -- it will hopefully remind people that hot snakes CAN do some real damage! And anyone keeping them or looking around for them had better have REALLY good medical insurance coverage!!! I know this kid's situation was a freak accident... but keepers should be careful.

Ashleigh I sincerely hope that you have grown out of THAT attitude!

And thats only half the story! Quite frequently peole who have been envenomated and treated with antivenin then discover that they are allergic to the antivenin! I have a friend that was bitten by a copperhead and treated. The reaction to the antivenin was worse than the reaction to the venom!

I'm not positive on this but I beleive that only a doctor can administer antivenin due to the aforementioned possibility of an extreme allergic reaction.

when oshea was bitten by the rattlesnake on ANIMAL PLANET. he became allergic to the antivenom and since it was cultured in live horses hes now allergic to them to. im in the process of looking for a home for my pygmy, that link was like shock therapy.

You are correct Merlin,,,it has to be administered by a physician. And those pics sure are an eye-opener.
