New Ball Pythons!

I have my 35g Hex setup and ready to go. I went to a local pet shop today
and purchased 2 Baby Ball Pythons! They are captive-bred! One is Male and
one is a female (Female is in my brothers care but will be in the same home). Y'all wont believe the price either! I got both for only $110! I will be picking them up tomorrow. Can't wait. I will have photos as soon as possible!

My Bp was my first pet. I got him when I was 6. I am turning 20 so it shows how long they last. I still have him today but sadly, I took him to the vet and he has a tumor like thing near his spurs. But the Bps will be your companion for years to come. Good Luck with your new buddies,
Justin

J-Man, I'm so sorry to hear about the tumor. Hope for the best for him.
When I bought the snakes last night the owner said, "It is not IF they
bite, it is WHEN they bite". I know this has to be true, but have any
of you been biten (Stupid Question)? He said it is the shock that hurts
more than the acual pain the first time.

That does not necessarily have to be true. You may go through your entire life with a snake and not get bitten. Granted you must look at it as being always a possiblity. Generally when you get bitten it is because you have done something dumb. Handling the snake when your hands smell like food, making a motion that the snake deems as threatening particularly if the snake is not accustomed to you yet. If you try and look at things from the snake's veiwpoint it will go along way towards avoiding a bite. Virtually ever one I have ever spoken with that got tagged stated that it was their own fault. I personally have been bitten on several occassions but only once from a Ball.

I have a 4 year old pair. The female has never even offered to bite despite the fact that she is handled constantly by any number of different people including my grandchildren and the children of our friends. The male has bitten me once, 3 days after I got him as a hatchling. I was holding him in my lap and not paying attention and made a quick movement directly toward his face. Major mistake! He struck me but I didn't even realize he had bitten me until I saw a little pinprick drop of blood on my hand. he has never even offered to strike since.

While it is something to be avoided don't allow the fear of a bite to freak you out. It isn't nearly as bad as you think. A bite from a cat or dog will do much more damage than any ball python. As said its more shock that it happened than anything else.

Good luck with your new ball python babies!! Can't wait to see pics!
Knock on wood; my BP, Monty, has never bitten me... although with the mite-treatment baths, ointments and the injections for tapeworms: I've given him plenty of reasons to want to. He is the sweetest of snakes.

My BRBs are another story: I got them both as adults: I've been bitten 5 times by Talyn and once (so far) by Q. All the bites were mistakes somebody(usually me) made = not the snake's fault.
I think that Q was mistreated: she hisses and tries to bite any time someone takes hold of her tail. (I'm wondering if her previous owner used to pick her up that way.) At the vet, her head was near me and the vet grabbed her tail (I'm not sure why: the examination was finished and we were just talking while Q explored the table). Q flew into a hissing fit trying to bite anything she could get and she got my hand! It didn't hurt more than a sting, but I had about twelve holes (I have pics to prove it) and these bites do bleed a lot... that can be scary if you're not expecting a lot of blood. (But that is good against infection) They can also cause bruising either from the strength of the bite or just some extra bleeding just under the skin.
Like Merlin said, a lot of people never get bit... and it's really just more scary than painful. You should be up to date on your tetanus shots though, just as a precaution.

Thanks for your comments. I put them in about 2 hours ago and they seem to like their new home. I have a question though, how long should I wait before holding them?

Hi Congrats on the new BP! We usually let our BP settle down for about a week before handling... and at least 2 days after feeding so that they don't get stressed and regurgitate

I am having problems finding how to heat the tank properly... Any suggestions? I was using a 150W Heat Edmitter and a 100W Day Bulb for Day and 150W Heat Edmitter and 100W Infared Night Bulb at Night. Should I change this?
