Petco

do you like the way they treat their animals? tell why or why not..

honestly I dont like what they do with their leopard geckos. they had like a dozen of them running around in a tiny cage! one of them had to have been no more than 3 grams!

they had a beautiful tangerine carrot tail, BUT it had a regenerated tail.

i was thinking of buying another leopard gecko from there.

Re: Petco

when I go there it seems like they really dont take the time to feed them properly. for example they had lettuce and big carrot chunks in a cage with baby Bearded Dragons. they cant eat that, but they looked ok and im sure they can probably use a good home. Ive see way worse at some mom and pop pet stores

Re: Petco

The corporate policies for Petco hinder alot of things. I worked at Petco for 7 months before I finally gave up and quit a couple years ago.

I was in charge of aquatics and exotics. (Reptiles) I did whatever I could to improve the conditions of the animals and broke policy on feeding them to ensure everyone had their fill, but there is only so much that can be done.

The housing issues were policy. We couldn't enlarge enclosures, add hides, use different substrates, etc. There was a planned look for each tank and it had to be met.

I am not a fan of the chain stores at all.

Re: Petco

and by the looks of the cage, they didn't safe-proof it either..there was like a 1/4 inch crevice that a little baby leopard gecko could get an arm or tail caught in. honestly they should take in consideration of the animals and their needs instead of making money. all the other animals look pretty healthy like the rodents..but the birds look a little bit dirty.
geez Rich, i never knew about the inside part of Petco. like their conditions and you working there.

Re: Petco

I had a medical issue that was preventing me from doing my normal job. (I am a carpenter.) As a result I needed to find another job while I got the blood clot issue under control. That is when I worked at Petco.

Not to long ago Petco finally changed their substrate from sand to repticarpet. I am not sure if it is nation wide, but my local stores converted.

Re: Petco

The petco next to my house in Texas uses very bare enclosures, only ever seen tile in the leopard gecko homes! I think it depends place to place. Reptiles aren't popular here, so they only ever have a few at a time(most I ever saw was 3 leopard geckos!)

I think because we get so few they can afford to give better care. Granted it isn't great, seen a lot of injuries on toes from crickets and the sizes are still way too small!

Re: Petco

My local petco still uses sand in their Bearded Dragons and gecko tanks. Very sad living conditions!!!

Re: Petco

The Petco near me changed all their set-ups maybe 6-mos ago. It's not perfect, but it is a WHOLE lot better then it used to be. And they have a reptile manager who seems to care. When I pointed out to her that the temps on the Leopard geckos tank was way off, she said she would check on it - and the next time I was in, it had been corrected.

I don't care too much for the PetSmart, but the Petco seems to be trying.
