So, Black light bulbs.. I need assistance.

Ok, so my girlfriend and I are having a discussion about UVA/B light. I say BLBs are harmful to eyes and skin, she tells me to give her proof and my break down of UVA and the sensitivity of eye cones, rods and all that jazz would not cut it. So, I searched for documented proof and found nothing but other sites saying it's harmful. I was hoping someone here, Dom? may have the sources. I have sent her information on Ultraviolet rays and how it in itself is harmful, but can't find anything specifically on the bulb. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Zane

If you are referring to common party black light bulbs then unfortunately you must concede to your girl Effects bulbs produce near UV light. We humans cannot see UV light and therefore would not find them all that interesting if they produced it. It is possible that they emit some UV wavelengths but UV is not part of the visble spectra for humans. As far as rods and cones go rods are primarily for light/dark adaptation while cones are for color vision. Rods are subject to photobleaching and the tips are constantly renewed to my understanding. To protect rods from photobleaching they can be embedded in the pigment layer of the retinal epithelium, which is why melanin-challenged organisms can be very sensitive to bright lights. On a general level UV wavelengths are very short and attenuate quickly but they are also high energy wavelengths meaning they are less than 390nm as opposed to say blue wavelengths that are visible and would be around 500nm. To the best of my understanding it is the high energy of UV that makes it dangerous to organisms such as humans.

The bulbs I'm referring to are BLBs-the true black lights. The Ultraviolet bulbs.
Also, I'm refering this for herps.

Plus, I refuse to let her win!
Zane

Edit- I wrote too much retarded nonsense.

Hi Zane-

Bob Mac and I had this discussion late last week.

My understanding is that BLB give off good UVB, but no UVA or full spectrum, which is necessary for healthy reptiles.

BLB used in conjunction with a full spectrum bulb (like the GE true Light) would provide adequate UVR for the reptile.

I'll check my notes on the specifics of BLB UVR that Bob discussed with me.

I'll leave the rods and cones discussion to the scientists.

As I understand it, BLB are not harmful to reptiles when used properly, just like any other light source. In fact, he kept his own creatures under BLB for years prior to a decent UVB producing lamp was created.

Good luck with the girlfriend, unfortunately I can't help there. LOL

I've always thought the radiation was a bit much in these bulbs. Don't make me have to correct myself in other forums, heh.. Maybe this is why my link was disabled.

I'm looking forward to seeing the information you have whenever possible.
Thanks for the replies.

As for the girlfriend, maybe she'll forget the conversation, heh.

I really don't think this helps much, but I do know that UVC is the harmful one that causes cancer. That's pretty much all I had to add.
