UTH for leos...

I have a question. I have a 55-gallon tank that I will be putting 6 leopard geckos in once it's cleaned. Now, I need some opinions. I want to go with the under tank heating instead of the lamps. I'm going to leave it up to the natural sun to provide them with the photoperiod. The tank is on my southern wall, so the sun shines right into my room. It will rarely hit the tank directly, but with my room being white, it lights my room up pretty well. But the thing is...I have a towel underneath my tank. It is resting on a wooden dresser. Will it be hazardous to put a heating pad under there? My mom is certain it will cause a fire eventually...just having it under the tank at all. Any suggestions? Is it really dangerous? If so, what can I do to fix the problem? And if it will be fine and won't cause a fire, what do I tell my mom to convince her? Let me know...thanks. I need to make the switch tomorrow...because the dominant female is bullying the other 2 bigger ones, and I'm thinking the extra space will calm her down. (FYI, the 3 smaller Leopard Geckos are seperated from the bigger 3 until they catch up in size.)

I'm not sure, but I always put a sheet of reptilecarpet or a rag flat under the tank to keep the parts of the Under Tank Heater that do not stick too well. Also it increases warmth.

Why do yo need a towel for your tank? Usually you can use about 4 books to eleate the tank so there is no risk of fire or tank cracks underneathe.

a Under Tank Heater will be fine. they only increase the temp. As long as its not directly in the sun you have nothing to worry about. I have a 20L with my two girls in it and tossed that artificial light setup months ago. They're noctornal anyway so its not like they'll be missing much. Just make sure you're temps are right and you have a good calcium supplement. There use to be a guy named Rich here and a while back he told me to use a supplement with d3 and phosphorus but I read such contradicting replies in the leopard section so I'll have to look more of that up.

Hope I helped and Happy New Years!
