Pet Store Concern
Hey guys,
I live in the washington area, there is a pet store I am really concerned about. The care and well being of some of the reptiles there is absolutly horrible. IE a veiled that looks like it's bones are about to come through it's skin it's so skinny. A 16-18 inch Bearded Dragon in a 10 gallon tank etc etc. Anyone know where these concerns can be reported?

Re: Pet Store Concern
Sadly, that's a pretty widespread problem - many pet stores are in it for the buck. I have often found they are the most expensive places to get a pet, and generally, the animals are in worse shape for having lived there.
You could try contacting a local branch of ASPCA, or humane society, or herp rescue shelters.
there are not near as many laws protecting animals as there should be, so largely, abuse of that type is widespread.

Re: Pet Store Concern
Just a thought, Many sick reptiles are shipped that way from the breeders and the store then has to try and rehabilitate them once in their possession.
I have a friend who owns a pet store and I once watched as he opened a shipment of geckos. All looked healthy but one which looked like skin and bones. he had to nurse it back to health. But if you were to walk into his store and saw that animal and assumed it was his fault, you would be wrong.
I would ask lots of questions before deciding guilt.

Re: Pet Store Concern
I would suspect animals arriving in such conditions would be kept in a back room, and not labeled "for sale"
I would start out with asking to talk to the owner and pointing out some of the faults.

Re: Pet Store Concern
Yes, try talking with the owner, then, if nothing is done, try calling the ASPCA.

Re: Pet Store Concern
If you want, you can follow my thread about the same thing. I actually got some results out of it. The last time I went into the store, everyone was much healthier.

That's if they're big enough to have a back room.

I'm with Liz here, sick animals should not be on display. If nothing else (i.e. no back room) they should be clearly marked as 'not for sale'.
Personally I don't think I'd give my business to a petstore that had sick animals stuffed all over the place, rehabbing them or not they shouldn't be out with the general population.

Re: Pet Store Concern
Og makes a VERY valid point.
As I once worked in the wholesale side of the pet trade I can tell you that some of the animals that are received are NOT in the best shape. When the store takes delivery they have the option of refusing to accept the animals.
But sadly, as most of us here know already, often the petstore has no idea what the animal should look like healthy anyway! Or how to properly care for them.
They just order something and try to sell it.
I would venture to say that most of our members know much more about the animals in the store than the store owner does!
