The Philosophy of Cage Cleaning...

Here is a philosophical question that will never been answered by science:

Why do the snakes releive themselves immediately after you clean the cage?!

I mean come on! According to science they are not capable of evil anthropomorphosized caniving behavior so why do they choose that moment to go? They're snakes anyway, it's not like they "choose" when they do and do not "go". Some of mine choose WHERE they go but I'm pretty sure they can't control when except for in cases of extreme fright. A schedule can not explain it, especially in my case since my cages get cleaned when I get to it or when the nose says so, whichever comes first. Grrrrrrrrrrr The animal that has put me into the present rant is of course the huge boa constrictor, whose cage I spent several hours improving yesterday, which he did NOT appreciate and has been sulking ever since Fortunately the big wart isn't eating at the moment so at least it's a big soupy mass of urates instead of a big pile of, well you know what comes out of boa constrictors Now I have to wait for said urates to coagulate (half an hour), capture the boa constrictor (another 45 minutes), "bag" him (another 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on how wiggley he is feeling), both of the last two must be done while avoiding bites or worse which could an additional hour or 3 if an emergency room visit is in order, remove everything from his cage and scrub it (15 minutes) put everything back in his cage, refill his water dish and get him back in the cage (at least 5 minutes) He will then proceed to continue sulking because he doesn't care to be captured and bagged.

Anyway I figure that the question originally posed will never be answered and will go down in history as one of those things like where is Jimmy Hoffa (did I spell that right)?

Any theories (on the snakes)?

LOL You do make me laugh Heather!

Well, in my experience, I have concluded that snakes are in fact capable of evil anthropomorphosized caniving behaviour!! I swear they just "know" -let's face it, they don't have too much to keep them amused, so when they see the opportunity of winding us up and causing us to have to get our hands dirty.. twice! .. they seize it!! Either that or it's some kind of territorial behaviour - "yuk, my cage smells clean, i need to cover it with my scent", but I think the first theory is much more plausable

Oh dear, time to clean out herps.. again!

LOL! I know what you mean Heather! I have been in the same situation too many times to mention.
Good thing that snakes don't have external ears or they would have BURNED!

test

Well, since I just turned Talyn's terrarium into a hospital ward, we'll see how your theory holds up: she's due for a dump, and I'm sure she'll hold it just long enough to get into the newly cleaned terrarium, so I can do it all again.
At this point, I couldn't get mad at her for anything though... poor girl...so I'll just grin and bear it.

I blame the clean cage/poop theory!! They just can't stand the fact that their place is clean! So they decorate it their own way! lol

my corn snake does that to me every single time I clean his cage...

plus, i can never take him out too long or let guests hold him because he poop/ sprays all over them (and the oriental carpet)

You'd think corns would always be the easiest snake to care for, NO, mine hates being held, is squirmish, and won't eat when he's shedding, or just feels like fasting.

My bp never ever had any eating problems whatsoever... he'll eat whatever is dropped into his cage and smells like food, ans sometimes eats my cornsnake's food when the corn doesn't feel like eating... go figure.

The boa is now sitting on his perch looking quite self-satisfied and has been ever since I made the original post

Next time you might try putting him in the tub for a bit and see if he lets go.
Whenever I have a need to take one of my snakes any where thats what I do. In the warm water usually a few minutes and whooosh!

my snakes always wait until I clean the cage to go to the bathroom in it. when I notice that they're going to go even when I want to take them out and handle them, i put them in a container and wait. doesn't take them very long to go then I clean out the container and hold the snake for awhile. that way they're done when I put them back in a clean cage.

I don't have a bathtub I'm just glad Boyd doesn't use the "fright response" method when I'm holding him
