Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
Well, I caught the last 10 minutes of the frog special. From what I saw it was amazing. I know animal planet likes to repeat shows so I looked up when they will be on again. The next time I can actually watch the frog show again is at 4:00 next Sunday So I'm going to check it out.
Here are the show Titles: The Cold-Blooded Truth Giant crocodiles courting, tortoises jousting with 'lances' and bright red sumo-wrestling frogs... David reveals the surprising truth about the cold-blooded lives of reptiles and amphibians, as dramatic, as colourful, as tender as any other animal. Invaders of the Land Discover the extraordinary and intimate lives of soft-skinned amphibians. From steamy jungles to dry deserts, David looks at the bizarre life histories that enabled amphibians to break their ties with water and invade the earth. Dragons of the Dry David comes face to face with a monitor lizard that stands on tiptoe, is flashed at by anole lizards and uses a rod and line to tempt a timid skink out of its burrow. Sophisticated Serpents How have snakes, the most misunderstood group of reptiles, used the most simple but elegant body plan to succeed on land, sea and even in the air? Armored Giants David meets the reptile heavyweights to show what it's like to live within a suit of armour. He reveals a dynamic, warm and caring side to ancient giants. Re: Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
I also watched the first 3. I think one of the strangest things I had seen was the male frog who carried his offspring in pouches and they developed in there completely. It was pretty weird. (Unfortunantly the male could only fit "x" amount of them, so some unfortunantly didn't get to grow up.)

Re: Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
Yeah, Rich that was the weirdest thing that I saw. Was amazing though that there is something like that. The gold frog was awesome too.

Re: Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
I'm soooo ticked I missed the frog program. I came really close to staying up late to watch it at midnight since I don't have to be to work until noon today. But my eyes were getting droooooooopy.

Re: Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
Another cool thing was the lace Monitors. (I believe it was them.) They use termite mounds to incubate their eggs. Termites maintain a constant temperature in their mounds, and its ideal for the monitors. The problem though with this incubation method is that the termites seal the eggs in. When they hatch, 10 months later, they have no way to get out because the termites have repaired the hole the adult had made. Since the walls can be as much as a foot thick, the babies aren't strong enough to dig through.
Unbelievably, a lace monitor came along and opened up the top of the mound to allow the babies to escape. This is almost a year after they had been laid. There was no way to confirm if it was the mother, but the babies were released. It was pretty cool. The gold frogs were pretty sweet as well Nate. I forget which species it was, I think a poison dart, but they were first claiming their space and then one decided it was "go time" with one in the area and they wrestled for a while. It was pretty comical. |

Re: Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
I wasn't expecting to see those. I was just flipping through channels and happened to stop at Animal Planet at the start of the first one.
They did it really well. Are these the same people who shot Planet Earth and Blue Planet? Because they shooting/editing style is very similar.

Re: Life in Cold Blood Series on Animal Planet
I was wondering if it was leftover footage from Planet Earth. I know they shot millions of hours of footage to make the series and there is no way they could have used it all.
The other animal I saw, was a monitor lizard who kept her eggs inside her until they hatched, to help keep them warm. When she gave birth she lost 1/3 her body weight. They said in comparison, it was as if a human gave birth to a 3 year old, the baby was HUGE.
