I Almost Bought This Book

Took me by surprise. I thought it was going to be a book of dinners by herpers. Nope, it was a book of how to prepare herps! It had everything in it. I thought of Lacey (iguana stew) and Nicole (turtle soup)

Re: I Almost Bought This Book

Read the review... you'll discover that it's mostly a scholarly work that preserves the history of how humans have used reptiles and amphibians as food through the ages. It actually sounds like it might be a great book to have as a reference.

Re: I Almost Bought This Book

As the publisher of this book I have to comment.

The Author, Ernest A. Liner is a long time herpetologist and has written several papers on herps from Mexico and the US. Throughout his life he has actively contributed to several herp societies, both financially and with his time. He was born in southern Louisiana, where he has lived his entire life. With an interest in herps and living in an area where they are regularly eaten, Ernie began collecting recipes utilizing amphibians and reptiles. The first edition of this book was published in 1977 and distributed at the meeting of the Herpetologist League and the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles. After that book was published professional herpetologists, and other people, began sending Ernie additional recipes. This book includes roughly 950 recipes, including such things as how Australian Aborigines cook monitor lizards and how Peruvian natives cook dart frogs.

My distribution of this book has been primarily to herpetologists - not a group that usually eats herps. I myself have never eaten a herp and never plan to. However, I do see the value in the cookbook as a reference to how amphibians and reptiles have been utilized by humans.

Along these lines, many crocodilians can thank their survival to the fact that they are used as a food source - this gives locals a reason to protect them. The IUCN Crocodile Specialist Group has used this fact in their conservation plans.

In publishing the book, I did not want people to use it as a cookbook - at least not for herps. It is a unique item though - something for the person who has everything.

There is also a poster of just the cover. In fact if you order the book and mention this forum, I'll give you a special discount and throw in a copy of the poster for free.

Re: I Almost Bought This Book

Ok, who notified the publisher! :

I must say, I found it an interesting book. All the different kinds of ways to prepare foods. We often have discussions about different cuisine on this board, from eating snakes to bugs to crocodiles. We forget that what is not common in the US is often common in other countries.

As a frog keeper, I joke about how me eating a frog would be like an indian eating a cow, and got mortified when my inlaws took me to a restaurant in florida that served frogs legs. However, many people LOVE frogs legs.

My dad's friend from Taiwan cooks dog. Its all about what you were grown up on and what is normal.

However, I found it a VERY interesting book, and way to respond to fast to this thread!!

Re: I Almost Bought This Book

Thanks for posting, Breck! (And welcome to HCN)

I took the time to read the abstract on the link that Liz (Schlegelbagel) posted, and found it quite interesting. It looks like a "must have" for my library.
