Herps in the News

Before I post this, I want to make sure that everyone knows that this lady sounds to be mentally ill.

The bellingham hearld.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROCHESTER, Wash. -- Authorities say a woman has been found living with hundreds of rats and four malnourished snakes in a woman's home outside Rochester.

Thurston County Animal Services Director Susanne Beauregard says an official from the Area Agency on Aging alerted authorities about a month ago, but the woman has been uncooperative. She says the woman calls the rats her friends.

On Wednesday a search warrant was obtained and officers found the floor covered with rat droppings and the carpets soggy with rat urine. Beauregard says two malnourished boa constrictors, a corn snake and a king snake were seized from cages.

Investigators believe the woman bought some rats to feed the boa constrictors, but they got loose and filled the house with their offspring.

Guess she didn't want to feed her friends to the snakes.

Re: Herps in the News

That is certainly an odd story. You would think that with the number of rats in the home, the snakes would have been obese opposed to malnourished. It's unfortunate that she couldn't distinguish between reality and her "friends".

Its actually a mental disorder called "Hoarding".
You see it often in the "Crazy cat lady" stories.

Re: Herps in the News

Its very sad. Some people arnt always healthy mentally. Im just glad that the snakes are in the right hands now. After reading this and having it so close to home, this morning, since im only a few hours away, I contacted the animal services workers to offer my services to them for the seized snakes. I was transfured to the worker handeling the case, and she said that they have no one in place to work with agressive reptiles, and will most definatly want to meet with me after the health of the snakes is better.

I would guess the snakes were forgotten about as she was getting aquainted with with her new friends. It must have been 100% pure "heck" for those snakes to see all those rats running around and only getting the taste of glass everytime you try to get one.I'm not even talkin about the starvation part. It's sad

Re: Herps in the News

Yea I have to agree with you og... Could you imagine being locked in a glass box inside mc donalds and starving? Like I said before, I will have to assume this lady is mentally ill. There is no earthly way she could be sane and sound of mind. Especially if her house was that bad, and the rats were still her friends. I have pet rats, but if my snakes were starving, which I would never let that happen, they would quickly turn into snake food, and I mean quick.

Re: Herps in the News

I saw some video on this today, there was a red tail boa, just like a 2 second clip, it didn't look horrible considering the condition of the rest of the house. It was terrible.
They also had footage of a corn but I think it was probably stock footage. I'll have to ask Phil when he gets home tonight since I'm actually watching the channel that he works for for once.
