Shocked at Petco
I'm not exactally where I should post this, so I'll just put it here.
I can't even begin to write how I feel about this, so I'll just let the pics tell the story.

Re: Shocked at Petco
Looks like most pet stores to me, not just Petco. Nothing good obviously, but nothing different either. Is it still alive?

Re: Shocked at Petco
What, someone is shocked at Petco? You must be new Petco among others is infamous for things exactly like your pictures. But like Matt said. Every pet store I've ever been to I've seen something like that at one time or another.

Re: Shocked at Petco
In my experience, the sad truth is that Petco and Petsmart are actually better than the locally owned pet stores here in ND. ND's kind of behind the times when it comes to exotic pet care, and the local places don't have as knowledgeable a crowd to appease as the larger national ones, which usually have standards that apply evenly to all their stores, regardless of location.

Re: Shocked at Petco
That anole is near dead...or dead...its an all for profit buisness...no love or little love for the animals.
Maybe it is a tactic to get people to buy them. A pet store in Helena, MT has an Iguana that has Metabolic Bone Disease so bad its jaw doesn't even match (doesn't close), naturally it is all covered in bleeding sores. I don't know if it can really move because of the Metabolic Bone Disease or the inclosure. It is an old one also, like 4' long living in a 3' inclosure. I wanted so bad to rescue it I almost purchased the old guy...they would've just gotten another one to mess up...
Is there anything that can be done about this sort of thing?

Re: Shocked at Petco
Regrettably thats not near as uncommon as I wish.
I work part time at a petco, and when I started, and went through cleaning out the tanks, did find a few deceased animals. Even now, its not uncommon for a green anole to not make it, there fragile little guys, and arrive already at a size where males will (and do) fight, usualy to the point of one not eating, and dying, its tough to catch usualy, but its still pretty bad that one was sitting out dead like that.
If you really want to mess withthat Petco a bit, maybe make (at least the anoles) cages better. Go in acting all official, (dont tell anyone you work for petco, but just dont act like someone there to buy anything either. ask to speak to the reptile specialist, if ones not available, just ask the associate themself, or a assistant manager, and ask them why the Green Anoles tank is not up to Planagram (its a petco thing)
Point out that they are on Repti-bark, while they should be on forest bedding, they require two water bowls (the corner dishes) on opposite sides of the tank, and that though the plant does look nice, they also must have 2 Basing branches in the tank.
Petco has a set of standards they are required to follow, different for each animal. The standards for Green Anoles are Forest bedding substrate, 2 corner water dishes, and 2 Large basking branches.
You could take it even farther, just about any gecko should be on Repti bark, but most everything else should be on either Forst bedding, or aspen shavings (Corn Snakes, Ball Pythons) The exception being Leopard geckos and bearded dragons, who (as much as I hate it) should be on fine white VitaSand.
Act official, scare em a bit, you may get them to change it around. If they dont, call the petco customer assistance number and complain about the conditions there (embelish as much as you feel neccesary) It may just get the District Manager breathing down the General Managers back a little bit.

Re: Shocked at Petco
you guys cant bash all petco's they are not all the same as some may think. Yes petsmart and petco have corporate guidelines to follow then we all know is not correct. however some managers of some of the stors to ignore these guidlines and do what is better for there animals. I dont work at any of these chains however I dont think you should say petco is bad unless you have been to them all. I have 2 petcos near me and 2 petsmarts and the funny thing is one of each of them is the way everybody is like the ones everybody is talking about and the other 2 are opposite. its the squirly managers that dont want to go out of the box and do something they can get into trouble for. Secondly the more people purchase reptiles and think there doing a favor buy saving the reptile and buying it. You are then telling the store to go get another one to replace it with and treat it the same way. stop buying from them and this includes all supplies, crickets, etc etc

Re: Shocked at Petco
I will say, not all petcos/petsmarts are created equal. Some have people who care for their animals, other's don't. Some will take suggestions on care, others will tell you to go to ****.
And urorex is right, if you buy a sick one, they will just get a new one to make sick.
You can always try calling the ASPCA or animal control for some advice.
