That's really nice. Lifesized, though? I thought it would be bigger!

I like the warning before you close the window, too.

Re: Life Size Blue Whale Pic

Very neat. I kinda thought it would be bigger as well. I figured the eye would be as big as my head.

Re: Life Size Blue Whale Pic

Though an interesting display that is hardly a true life sized photo!
If the eye was no bigger than what is shown on the computer screen, in the full length shot of an animal with a body length of 80-100 feet the eye would not even be visible!

Re: Life Size Blue Whale Pic

Merlin is correct. I calculated it, and that whale is about 36-40 feet long. Maximum length for a blue whale is 90-110 feet, so it's a little less than half grown. It's actually more comparable to a pygmy Bryde's whale, Balaenoptera edeni, which is in the same genus as the blue and thus looks very similar, but only grows to about 40 feet.

I also just thought I'd point out that eye size doesn't directly relate to body size. Generally speaking, the larger you are, the smaller your eyes are in relation to the rest of you. Though this whale is less than half the size of a real adult, it's eye is about twice as big. An adult blue whale's eye is about 2-3 inches in diameter and is often compared to the circumference of a tea cup. Eyesight isn't very important for them, so they don't need large eyes. Plus it's hard to make a giant squishy eyeball stable I imagine.

And when you think about it, an eye the size of a tea cup is still pretty big...just not when compared to the rest of the body. The largest eye in the world belongs to the giant squid, which is as big around as a dinner plate, and these squids are much smaller than a blue whale.

Another interesting tidbit...most of the large rorqual whales can only swallow something not much bigger than a grapefruit. They're designed to filter krill and small fish, so I think it's to prevent something too large for them to digest from being swallowed. I don't remember where I learned that though.

But anyway, that's enough about whales. And it's still a cool link

I dunno its cool none the less. The eyeball on my screen is 5"L x 2 1/2" Tall. Thats about the size of a tea cup. It also would depend on your screen resolution too. Mines at 1440*900 so that may play a role.

Re: Life Size Blue Whale Pic

From pictures I saw in classes in my undergrad and from pictures I am looking at in a book, I would say that it is more than likely a juvenile or a eden's whale, also called a bryde's whale, however that is a speculative subject. The tail is a little less than classic, and the fin to fluke ratio looks to be a bit off.

It is a really cool site, I've seen one in my life in the wild, and they are huge, when they come up, it looks like a boat coming up from the bottom after you, then they breach, which is incredible to see. For those of you into loud sounds, they are the loudest animal on earth and capable of intentionally communicating for miles at the "sofar" depth.

Cool critters

Re: Life Size Blue Whale Pic

Man, you are so fortunate! I have always wanted to see a whale up close. I think they are all really amazing, though personally I lean more toward Humpbacks myself.

It really must have been something to see.
