Wow, he must have been in bad shape if you wanted to take him to a petco. lol. Same as the Leopard Geckos, we have to put them on sand, even the babies.

Re: Dumbest Things Heard in a Pet Store
**shudder** Petsmart, **shudder** i dunno about the petsmart near you, but even petcos a step up around here. Last time I was in a petsmart they had green tree frogs and a red eyed tree frog in the same tank, not to mention the space they give there reptiles is ridiculous, i could go on, but im sure your all familiar...

Re: Dumbest Things Heard in a Pet Store
Well it can change, if there was one or more very knowldegable associates at a petsmart, and a petco in the same town without any good associates the petsmart would probaly have better cared for animals, but on average petcos are definitly better. petco has standards all the animal cages must comply to, I just finished going through and redoing every reptile tank in the store and getting them "up to code". They tell you exactly how each different tank must be set up. I dont really like them completly, because given more free reign I could set up better tanks, but the standards have displaying animals, more than providing for animals in mind. but in stores without anyone with reptile experience the standards are a decent minimum.

Re: Dumbest Things Heard in a Pet Store
I can understand that they have display as a priority, but you can display animals in such a way that they look good and still have proper care.
My favorite quote is always going to be "corns and kings are from the same place so they can be housed together."
I was walking into petsmart and they had corns and kings advertised under the same tank, I went over to their "specialist" and was informed that they had been like that for a week and nothing had happened. I tried to explain to him what he had done, and that was the response he gave me. I asked if he had sold any, and he said no, so I asked if I could see the california king, and one of the albino corns, he found them both, the kings was squeezing the life out of the corn so it made it pretty easy. Funny enough there were no other corns in the tank, and some fat happy kings.
I was told that they must have escaped, or been sold while he wasn't there.

Re: Dumbest Things Heard in a Pet Store
This is true, the one animal there that was fat and happy
By their justification, you could keep any animal with any other animal that is found in the same place in small quarters and expect that they will stay small and happy.
hmmm... scientific wheels turning... I wonder, if you stick a petsmart specialist in a small rubbermaid tote box would they adapt well to a captive environment, you could have your very own moron... you could probably even get away with feeding it just bread and water if you conditioned it right. I'm sure they don't really like to be let out, infact that would probably stress them too much as ther is too much out there and they could easily be overwhelmed, they don't even need lights or anything, and for what most of them are worth, you would never have to go see a vet, just let them die peacefully and then get another. Oh, and let's not forget, the southern ones are from the same place as cotton mouths and copperheads, so they would make excellent cage mates.
I'll bet there is a market for that somewhere.
