Yup, this wont just effect breeders. It will effect pet shops, rodents, cage builders, the list goes on.

I would also suggest that breeders whole sellers from other nations also write in though it may not be taken seriously a large number of imported animals come from the United States from larger breeders, if this resource is lost, then more animals will be imported from Farms risking the quality of the species. There are much better ways to handle this than an outright ban on trade. The US. is the leading importer of most reptile species. The economics of this idea were not much of a thought.

I wish they would not try to ban everything,,, just have some stricter regualtions on your "dangerous" snakes. Banning them is not the answer,, it will just mean more people breaking the law. That idea was obviously not thought out at all.

The importation and introduction of constrictor snakes into the natural ecosystems of the United may pose a threat to the interests of agriculture, horticulture, forestry; to the health and welfare of human beings; and to the welfare and survival of wildlife and wildlife resources in the United States. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
On September 21, 2006, we received a petition from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) requesting that Burmese pythons be considered for inclusion in the injurious wildlife regulations pursuant to the Lacey Act (18 U.S.C. 42). SFWMD is concerned about the number of Burmese pythons found in Florida, particularly in the Everglades National Park. We are looking at obtaining information on constrictor species in the Python, Boa and Eunectes genera for possible
addition to the injurious wildlife list under the Lacey Act.

The regulations contained in 50 CFR part 16 implement the Lacey Act, as amended. Under the terms of the injurious wildlife provisions of the Lacey Act, the Secretary of the Interior is authorized to prohibit the importation and interstate transportation of species designated by the Secretary as injurious. Injurious wildlife are those species, offspring, and eggs that are injurious or potentially injurious to wildlife and wildlife resources, to human beings, and to the interests of forestry, horticulture, or agriculture of the United States. Wild mammals, wild birds, fish, mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians, and reptiles are the only organisms that can be added to the injurious wildlife list."

It seems to me that this is a problem of people releasing their animals in the wild when they get too big. A problem of irresponsible pet stores selling these animals without informing their customers about how big they get and Irresponsible owners who don't bother to do the research on an animal before buying it.
We do have a problem down here in the southeast with people releasing both foreign herps and fish into the enviroment with dire consequences!

Og.. it seems that your interpretation is right on,,,, Unfortunately the responsible herp owners always suffer for the stupidity of the others, in my opinion there are definitely more of the irresponsible than the responsible.

If they just implemented the same laws over there like they do on me,, maybe there wouldnt be so many problems,, I swear animal control is always breathing down my neck to make sure I dont have snakes over 10 feet in the city limits. Not that I care, lol.

I will have to say that I do agree with putting harsh restrictions on just any old person being able to buy some of these larger species, but banning them all in all is a little over the top. If you make them hard to obtain,, the impulse purchases will not be in such the high numbers.
