Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........

Well I guess I post this here,, I am frustrated and disgusted at the same time. I guess I shopuld have titled it frustrations of a rescue slave........

I am going to pick up an iguana I adopted out 2 months ago. She was one of the Green meanie crew that came in here about a year ago. She came to me as a very young hatchling. I adopted her out to a vet tech in my area. When I adopted her out she was 28 inches long snout to tail length. I found out that they are feeding and have been feeding her raw meat, tuna, crickets, waxworms, the whole nine yards. When I asked her about it she stated yes,, that she has grown so much,, blah blah blah. I simply stated the facts about feeding them animal protein and the effects it will have on her. I interviewed her and she had all the right answers,, so WHY is she feeding her meat?????? According to her she is now 42 inches snout to tail length This iguana is approximatly a year old. I will keep this short because I could go on forever about the conversations we have had before it led up to me taking her back,, but geesh I am so mad,, she was one of the rare ones I got in here very young, and was easily rehabbed and raised by me for almost the first year of her life, so she was very healthy when I adopted her out.
I just cant wait to see what her reptile panel shows,, most certainly,, probably on the brink of complete kidney failure,,,,,ackk the guilt is just killing me. I obviously missed something in her process of adoption..........

I am just glad she believes I could really hold up the contract she signed with me about my having the right to take the animal back within a year if I feel that the needs are not being met or they are in grave danger. I would be hard pressed to have that hold up in a court of law,,, but who knows,, stranger things have happened..........I just hope all goes as smooth as it is planned out and she follows through. too bad I already filled her cage......good thing hubby is on a roll making them lately.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........

I am actually really angry when I read this...a vet tech?? Thats scary!
Why in the heck would she be feeding her MEAT??!!
I never understood why in the heck someone would take great advice from someone who is so knowledgeable about igs and then just throw all that great knowhow out the darn window!
I dont think its anything that you did wrong as far as the adoption process goes.
ahhhh I think I am better now would of liked to vent more but its too darn early and I need more coffee LOL
Its just that I see posts all the time here asking for help and then the people just do what they want anyway I cant imagine what seeing them in person would be like...very frustrating!

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........

That's just horrible! I don't think you are in any way responsible. It sounds like you did all the right things during the adoption process. Some people are very good at giving all the right answers up front, and then just doing as they please later on because they never intended to follow through with the proper things to do. I can't believe a vet tech would be so stupid! I think you're doing the right thing taking the poor iguana back again.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........

please tell me that you plan to show her the lab results when you get them back so you can prove to her the harm that she has done to an animal that she was supposed to be taking care of rather than harming.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........

That's sick.

Just goes to show you that no matter how careful you are, you cannot control what a person will do with their animals after they get them. It sucks, but it's definitely not your fault and not something that you can control - especially if she had all the right answers in the interview process. You're doing the right thing by taking her back. That counts for a lot. At least from here on out she will be well taken care of, even if her life is significantly shortened.

I'm getting madder at the vet tech as I type this, so I'll stop now.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........

you are abxolutely right Venus,, the whole situation just bites though.......

It is especially harder on me because I raised her since she was small and had her for almost a year,,I tamed her, the whole nine yards, so I am a little attached to her.

On another note I was just about eaten by a friends iguana I am boarding,, while he is in Iraq. Her name is Hagzilla (I didnt name her, lol ) She hates me!!! She lunged at me and jumped on me, and got a hold of a thick sweatshirt I was wearing and started shaking her head back and forth like A dog would, lol. Thank God the other one Spike tolerates me, and thats about it. You should see her with him though,, she is a huge baby, and apparantly I just disgust her, lol. Ungrateful thing....... she started off here! lol
