I'm curious. You said that they gave you all the right answers when you interviewed these people. Does that mean they willfully gave her nothing but meat, knowing that it would kill her eventually? I mean they had to have known she was a vegetarian. What would make them do that?

That's so twisted, and SCARY that it was a vet tech... I'm sorry you have to deal with idiots like that Nicole, please dont think it was your fault, and keep us posted on how she does with PROPER care.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........
She does not want to eat her greens very much, if at all, she is incredibly mean, at the moment I dont mess with her much, I am trying to give her time to settle in.
do I know why they did that? I dont have the foggiest clue, I think she may have picked up an old book and read that, then assumed I was the one feeding them improperly,, who knows........ I could assume this forever...
In outward appearance you cant see any permanent damage,, other than she is HUGE,, she is bigger than one of my 4 year old males. if she didnt have a tear in her dewlap I would have thought she was not the right one.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........
Nicole - don't you dare blame yourself. Sometimes people want that massively huge iguana and ignore the "rules". They know the meat is bad - have heard the stories - but they can get that ig HUGE on a high protein diet! This is the only conceivable reason I can think of that this "vet tech" would do this knowing what she knows...or supposedly knows.
I would send the results to her, too. She should also be legally liable for any vet costs incurred on this igs retrieval from an abusive situation. I don't know if you could claim that, but it's worth a shot.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........
that would be a long shot,, and frankly at this point way more energy than I have to deal with. My main focus is getting her to start eating like she used to when she was here,, I swear I filled her bowl three times a day. I am thinking about taking a piece of turkey and rubbing the smell from it on my hands then rubbing the greens with it,, so maybe she will detect that faint smell of meat and want to eat. Who knows,, that seems a little crazy, but if she does not start eating soon, I am going to have a whole different set of problems on my hands with her. I have to run that idea by the vet and see what they say first............. I cant imagine that it would be too awful since it would be the smell only,, but who knows.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........
The only experience I have with ig's is petsitting one for a week when I was younger, and I have a friend that has 4 adults, but maybe, worst case scenario, if even the smell does'nt do it, you may want to slowly wean the ig off meat, mixing meat and greens into a meal, and adding less and less meat as time goes by, im not going off experience here, but I would assume even a "grilled chicken salad" would be better than no food whatsoever. also, do you keep them separate?, maybe a cagemate could prove benificial. Like I said though, i'm not very knowledgable on this topic, just hope maybe something helps. Regardless, i think its great what you do for all these animals.

Re: Frustrations of a Rescue Worker........
Nichole I would just tough it out. When the ig gets hungry enough it will eat.
And with all the **** she had fed him he probably has a huge fat store!
Ryan meat is very rough on an igs system and should not be fed period!
And generally a cagemate will only mean a bloody ig!
