Green Iguana Society Message Board: Just a note for the Iguana lovers out there!!!!
I have a green iguana that is approximately 18 yrs old. He belonged to a young lady who donated him to her science teacher when she went away to college. At that time Iggy was around 10 yrs old then. He lived in a middle school classroom for about 4 yrs. The teacher was moved to a different location and could not take him with her, so she was trying to find a home for him.
Myself and my husband had helped a friend with hers for a while and done the research on proper care. We built a 6 ft x 5 ftx 4ft enclosure out of show glass and wood. we had all the lights and everything. So, when my husband saw this Iguana he fell in love. He was so tame and a people person so to speak. He brought him home and after about a month Iggy decided he no longer wanted the enclosure. after short tests to see if he could get along with my other animals ( 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 guinea pigs). He adapted well to everyone. so now he is a free roaming iguana.
He is now approximately 18yrs old. He is 6ft long and weighs about 25 lbs. He is very happy and healthy. I take pictures for a local tv station for the weather and on a whim submited a picture of Iggy to the for the pet of the week contest. He made it into the final 5. Very much to my surprise.
I help local people I know and those I don't with telling them to get their Igs out of aqariums and other inappropriate enclosures. I even refer them to this website [Green Iguana Society] for research on appropriate care. I don't breed him due to all of the inappropriate treatment out there. I keep in touch with local officials to help with rescues of iguanas and so forth.
If anyone is interested the contest is at wishtv.com under features. It is the pet of the week and anyone that wants to vote just clicks on the picture of my iguana Iggy. This is the first time an animal that is not a cat or a dog has been featured.
My main purpose of this is to raise awareness that there are other great pets out there especially people like ourselves whom like to take care of them properly and continue to do so out of love for the animals not other selfish reasons.
Iggy would greatly appreciate it because he doesn't think that the show dogs or the cat are any more cuddly than he is : )
