Boa Adoption - A First For Me

Here is the background info on this adoption/rescue.

I was approached by a girl named Sara at work regarding 2 snakes she wanted me to look at and hopefully help. The first snake she brought in for me to have a look at was a Ball Python. It was in bad shape. It was EXTREMELY dehydrated and was experiencing a terrible shed. To top it off, the little guy had mites and is underweight.

As odd as this may sound, my managers allowed me to set the little guy up at work in our backroom and try to help him there. Once he was in good health, we were going to adopt him out.

Well I got a co-worker (that I trust) to take it home and care for it. That worked out great.

The second snake I am too look at is supposedly in worse condition than the BP and happens to be a Boa Constrictor. (Purchased as a Redtail, but is likely a common.) This fella is around 6 feet already, though I haven't seen him yet to confirm anything.

I attempted to get another setup prepared at work and they had to decline housing a snake this large. Well I asked about a quick hold for "ME" and they agreed to do that.

Since this snake is worse off than the BP, and the BP looked pretty bad, I have decided to take him home to see what I can do for him.

He will be arriving at work on Monday morning and leaving with me that afternoon.

Because of his size, I am doing the enclosure shuffle. The Ball Pythons I have in my living room enclosure (160 gallons) are going into my (temporary) smaller enclosures in my bedroom (2 - 25 gallon enclosures).

I am now forced to build another enclosure for the Boa, because the balls are going back in there 160 which they have both loved.

I already have a ball python I will be looking to adopt out in a few weeks, so this guy was certainly unexpected. The only other option however is to leave it where it currently is, and that sounds like it would result in certain death.

I may also be looking to adopt this boa out, once I get it squared away.

Truth be told, this snake may not be in bad a shape as she thinks. lol, I haven't seen it yet, and she doesn't know much about them. I will post pictures within a few days of getting him.

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me

Well at least you were there to take it.
Who knows what would have happened otherwise!
Hopefully it won't be in as bad of shape as the BP!

Thank you for taking them from that situation. They really needed someone like you. I would take the boa, but am too far away. Good luck in finding him a new home.

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me

For those that don't know, my significant other "Angie", does NOT like snakes. lol

Before I said I would take it if we couldn't place it, I had to get her permission. She said we could take it in if there were NO other options. lol

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me

I figured since it was such a large species, she may feel uncomfortable with it in the house. She knew that at some point I was going to get one though, but she figured it would be after we got the house and it would be a baby. (Which was the plan.)

I am hoping I will be able to place this guy when he is ready so I can still do the whole "raising" it thing. If not, I may just have to get another one.
